Chapter Twelve

Sunlight pinched Georgia’s eyes. She turned over in bed and glanced at the clock—7:00 a.m. She pulled the covers over her head, not quite ready to deal with the world yet, or anything else for that matter.

Brandon had never even shown at miniature golf. She thought she might see him in the crowd of her ex-classmates streaming into the parking lot just minutes after she and Gideon returned, but there was only Reece looking suspicious and wondering why the two of them were in the van already. Gideon had said it was because he was all set to be the designated driver. She thought for sure they would get busted, but luckily Reece needed him more than she needed to interrogate him, so at least one of their dalliances was forgotten.

Georgia, however, could not forget. She had let Gideon inside her again. Just like he’d promised as he brought her to orgasm, she was pretty sure she never would forget. Not only that, she’d opened her legs and let him gaze at her before he fucked her on the grass. And she’d liked it.

Her words came back to her. He made me like it.

Georgia uncovered one eye and glanced at Kim. She was asleep, just like she had been when Georgia returned to the room last night. Now she just had to sneak out of the room without waking her. Georgia’s stomach tangled. She could avoid lying to Kim all she wanted, but damn she was starting to have trouble lying to herself.

It didn’t matter. She needed to keep doing it. Gideon might have fucked her like she was his, but he didn’t want her in any other way. If he had, why would he have brought up Brandon the minute he slipped out of her? But she didn’t want Gideon for more than what he’d done to her on that grass, either. It was her body, not her heart, that couldn’t be trusted, couldn’t be controlled.

She had to remember what this weekend was for—turning Brandon into her boyfriend and eventually her husband. Choosing the path she should have chosen ten years ago. She had almost twenty-four hours left to make that happen. Unfortunately, it was starting to look impossible.

She might not have wanted to completely talk to Gideon about her mother, but she couldn’t help but wonder what she would think of this. Her having animal-raw sex with Gideon when she was supposed to want Brandon. Mom had known Brandon, had liked him well enough. But would she agree with Kim that Brandon should be her husband? Georgia wished she could call her, but at the same time she was glad her mother would never know about this weekend—would never know who Georgia had truly become, or more aptly not become.

A pang cracked high in Georgia’s heart. Her mother would be more disappointed with who Georgia became right after she lost her. The cold, cruel shell her mother’s death forced her to occupy and the unkindness it compelled her to wield.
