Chapter Five

Cameron

The indecision in Ryan’s eyes made me second-guess Katy’s suggestion that I seduce the man. I’d been sneaking text messages with my best friend all day, and when I’d sent her the text while Ryan was out to move his car that he’d been visibly annoyed by the Valentine’s Inc. flyer, she told me to stop worrying about the fact he was the grandfather of a student in the school and go for it. There were two other basic skills teachers if anything worked out between us, which I hoped it did, but the flip-side was if it didn’t, I now had a good rapport with Stuart and if he ever needed my services, we would work well together.

“Are you nervous, Cameron?” Ryan asked me in a low, gruff voice.

“N-no,” I stammered, totally contradicting my answer.

He took a step toward where I hesitated in the center of my living room. “Are you sure?”

Clearing the nervous ball out of my throat before answering, I managed a firm, “Yes.”

“Put the wine on the table, Cameron.” Without hesitation, I turned and set the two glasses of wine down, and then spun back around to face Ryan. He stalked closer, slowly, and I knew I was no longer the seducer, but the prey. When he was half an arm's length away, he reached up and ran one finger down my cheek. “Are you sure you know what you’re doing right now?”

No. I nodded my head while staring into his dark brown eyes, eyes that were accentuated by the same uber long eyelashes that his grandson had.

“Use your words. Are you sure you want to cross this line? Stuart is my grandson and he lives with me. You’re a teacher at the school, and he’s going to be there for many more years.”

“That’s not a problem,” I said.

He cupped my cheek, giving me a soft smile. “And you remember the part about me being his grandfather? If my son was still alive, he’d be older than you.”

Squaring my shoulder, I leaned into his hand. “Your age is absolutely not a problem.”

“No?” he asked, stroking my cheekbone with his thumb.

I shook my head.

“Words, Cameron.”

“No. I like an older man who knows who he is and where he’s going in life.”

He smirked. “That’s funny, I thought that’s what I liked, too. But I’m finding myself oddly fascinated by a sassy school teacher with a shy streak he tries to hide.”

My body warmed with pleasure at his words as I did a mental fist pump in my head. Maybe I did spend too much time with kids.

Ryan’s hand fell from my face as he tilted his head. “What was that grin for?”

I shrugged. “Nothing.”

“Oh no, I let you get away with that last night, but if you want anything to happen here”—he motioned between the two of us with the same finger that had been caressing my face—“you have to tell me what you were just thinking.”

I shifted my eyes to the side and looked at the fireplace as I mumbled, “I was thinking maybe you were right and I spend too much time with kids.
