Planning the argument

Of course, it would be possible to consult still more sources, not least for useful quotations to support your own argument and conclusions. There is now, however, enough secondary material to start planning the essay, perhaps including the passages in quotation marks exactly as they stand, as well as references to primary sources, that is, the music which you know at first hand.

After rejecting any material which is not pertinent to the question, and making sure you are in a necessarily critical frame of mind (after all, you may not agree with everything in the sources consulted), a scheme for the essay should be prepared, such as the one on the next page.
