Rescue of a Sister

At the upper end of Osoyoos Lake, some Okanagan people have a camp. One man, Lefty and his younger brother decide to go to the mountains to hunt deer. The first night away, Lefty has a haunting dream.

This man, his name, Lefty,

because he don’t use his right hand.

Always use his left.

He’s Lefty.

See, that’s his name, Lefty.

And he’s got a brother.

And Lefty is the oldest.

And his brother was younger than him.

And that’s over in Osoyoos Lake,

in the upper end of Osoyoos Lake.

And that’s where the people, the Indians spent their winter

in that end of that lake,

in the north end of the lake.

No, they not spend the winter.

They had a camp there anyway

because the Indians,

they had a camp in one place for maybe two, three weeks,

and then they move to another camp.

They keep doing that all summer.

And this time they had a camp there in the summer.

Could be somewhere around in the month of August,

because they were saying the choke cherries were ripe.

That’s the only time the choke cherries were ripe,

in the month of August.

But anyway, there was a lot of Indians,

they had a camp there.

Then, this Lefty, he ask some of these Indians there

so they can go up on the mountains to hunt.

See if they can kill a big deer, big buck, you know.

But nobody seems to wanted to go

but only him and his brother.

Just the two of ’em.

So, they left from Osoyoos,

the end of that lake

and then they go hunting to the west side of that mountain.

So they went up way up to the top

so they can find a big buck, you know,

way up on top.

And they get up to the top,

but it’s kinda late in the day, you know,

getting towards evening.

So they say,

“We’re not going to hunt.

We just as well stop here.

And in the morning, early in the morning,

then we can look around see if we can see some deer.”

So, they stop and they make a sweathouse.

They fix up sweathouse, but they never burn ’em.

They wait till morning.

Early in the morning

then they can burn and go to sweathouse

before they go out hunting.

So they stop for overnight and go to sleep.

And at night when they were sleeping

and on his dream it’s not good.

There’s something happen in the camp.

But he’s not sure.

But he’s got a bad dream.

So, early in the morning, the next morning,

just daylight, it was in the summer, you know,

was pretty early,

so he tell his partner,

“We better burn that sweathouse

and then we can go to sweathouse.”

So they went and they light a fire.

Then the fire,

instead of burn right away, get an awful smoke.

Soon as he see the smoke,

that’s when he find out it was really bad at the camp.

They been killed,

the people at the camp.

They can find out with his smoke

but on his dream he’s not sure.

There was something happen but he don’t know really.

But when he make a smoke, he find out.

So he tell his brother,

“We should not go to sweathouse.

We go right now.

Go down and see what happened.

Maybe some people from some place come

and kill our people.
