Despite the amazing sleep the night before, as Leo, Watson, and I drove home, exhaustion settled over me. We’d stayed late chatting with Katie at the Cozy Corgi, and the massive plate of cookies she sent with us felt like a tray of bricks on my lap. Even as my body began to shut down, my mind continued to whirl. There would be no sleep that night, either.

“Gotta turn off your brain, love.” Without taking his eyes off the road, Leo placed a hand on mine as we turned into the relatively new development of mini-McMansions that preceded the little trail into the woods leading to my cabin. “I can feel it doing marathons over here.”

From the back seat, Watson whimpered, though whether in agreement or anticipation of seeing Barry, who knew?

“I know you’re right. I’m spinning in complete circles.” The answer hit me suddenly—I hadn’t sat down and read a book by the fire in days. But it almost always worked, getting lost in a story while my brain was distracted enough to snap a few puzzle pieces together on its own. Relaxation washed over me, and I grinned at Leo. “After dinner I think I’ll read a bit.”

“Chances are you’ll have a couple of new answers before bed.” He squeezed my hand before letting it go. “Barry is making dinner, remember?”

“Oh right… So vegetarian it is.” I glanced at the plateful of cookies. “That’s good. We’ll need some extremely healthy food to make up for eating every crumb of these piles of chocolate.”

All plans of a quick and easy dinner followed by getting lost in a book by the fire fled as we exited the surrounding forest to see that Mom and Barry’s van wasn’t the only vehicle parked in front of my little cabin.

Leo chuckled. “You think they told Percival and Gary that Barry was cooking when they invited them over?”

I couldn’t answer for a few seconds, physically feeling the loss of my reading-time retreat. “I love my family. Deeply.” With a sigh I looked over at Leo. “Do you think I can ask them all to just leave. We have no idea when or if Dean will get arrested. They can’t stay forever.”

“Have you met your mother?” Leo cocked his eyebrow at me as he shifted into Park. “She’s just as stubborn as you.”

Watson seemed to be experiencing his own inner turmoil as we walked toward the front door, frolicking one moment in clear anticipation of seeing Barry, then offering his classic corgi disapproval glare toward Percival’s car. He didn’t dislike my uncle, necessarily. I think it was more a case of there only being so much of the spotlight the two divas were willing to share.

“Surprise, we decided to have an extra spades night.” Mom greeted us at the door. “We thought the distraction would be helpful.”

Hoping to distract from my probably less-than-convincing smile, Watson decided to go with unfettered joy as he burst through the front door, rocketing toward Barry so quickly he yanked his leash completely out of my hand.
