The air sounded with a great detonation after lifting above the tower and he burst forward with an explosion of speed. The air around him was a force that ripped at his clothes and tore at his mind. His eyes blurred annoyingly, and he wondered why the wizards before him had not perfected the spell against this effect. His mind worked around the problem until he decided what would alter the spell sufficiently and spoke his command. Suddenly, the air around his head lessened. The watering eyes ceased, and he committed to memory his altering of the spell.

He had time for reflection as he traveled, for the distance was great though the speed mighty. She would make him the greatest force on the planet. His name would be known the world ’round. He would be feared by all evil. She even at one point said something about drawing a force for him to lead. He grinned and let a laugh bubble from his mouth as he soared through the air.

His destination drew close, and he dropped with a great detonation at the point he had chosen. The dust of the field jumped up around him, and he smiled as it settled.

Men were staring at him. Soldiers grabbed their weapons and trotted out to surround him. They pulled their swords in tight as they fell into formation, shields up in a phalanx, eyes hard and cold. Saykobar would speak to none of them. He stared in the direction of the master tent, not far from where he stood, and cocked a grin across his face.

They stepped forward, and Saykobar stomped his feet, spitting out a word of command. The land around him bubbled and churned as a monstrosity rose from the steaming earth. It possessed great arms, thick as a man and long enough to touch the ground. It towered many feet above Saykobar’s head, opened its earthen jaws to bellow and bray. The soldiers stepped forward as the tent flap opened and a tiger stalked from within.

As Saykobar’s eyes landed on Treason, he felt an odd sensation crawl his body. A fascination rose up in his mind, and he wanted to know the man, wanted to speak at length with him about his plans and tactics. It was in the lay of his face, the way his eyes greeted the world around him, and the strength that coiled within this man of Drine.

This was a man to follow. Saykobar instantly hated him.

Treason wore no shirt. His chain leggings gleamed polished and perfect, and Saykobar at once noticed the red birthmark he had read about earlier. It was the mark of royalty, a stamp of a bull’s hoof. Saykobar bowed and laughed.

“Who are you and what do you want? My men stand ready to—”

“—fight valiantly and die horribly,” Saykobar said. “I am Saykobar of Dragonsbane. I have come to aid you in your conquest.”

Saykobar of Dragonsbane, he decided on this title many days ago. He liked the tower he lived in. Had told Trevonne and Collette he would be remaining.
