When I opened my eyes, I was staring at Shadamarâs boots.
I pushed myself up onto my hands and knees and looked straight. The black stones of the Temple of the Bond glinted under the sun. Nemryth was standing a few feet away, a scowl plastered on her face.
âWhy did you lead them here?â she demanded.
âIâm sorry. I had no choice. You must leave. Now. The king seeks your destruction.â
âWe will not leave our home. If the king wants a fight, I will give him one.â
âNo.â I shook my head. âHe has a soldier watching Maren. If you kill the king, the soldier will kill her.â
Nemryth stared at me for a long moment in silence.
âFine,â she said. âWeâre still searching for Risod, so that will give us an excuse to leave the temple. How long do you need?â
An idea came to me.
âIs there anything of Risodâs you can give me?â
âWhy?â
âThe king wants to find you, but because of the enchantments of the forest, he wasnât able to. He needed me to show him. Iâm sure his sorcerer here,â I kicked Shadamarâs foot, âcan track Risod down if he had one of her belongings. Itâs how someone found me once. He will lead us to the dragon slayers, and if all goes well, theyâll wipe each other out.â
Nemryth smirked, and I knew she liked my plan.
âThatâs clever of you,â she said. âI will leave something out for them to find. Once they are on the trail, we will follow you.â
âDonât let them see you or that will throw off everything.â
âThey will not detect our presence.â
I nodded. âYou should go before they wake up.â
Nemryth chuckled. âYou know we control when the magic lets you wake up, donât you? They will not come to until I let them. It is the only thing about the enchantments that has not changed.â
I did not know that, but it was great news.
âPut me back to sleep,â I said. âAnd let the king wake before me. This needs to be believable.â
âAs you wish. We will leave now. It wonât take long. Hopefully, this works.â
âIt will,â I said. It had to.
âSee you soon.â
The grogginess washed over me, and I crumpled to the ground. The next thing I knew, someone was shaking my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see Erling standing over me. His guards were gathered around him, weapons drawn.
âGet up,â Erling said.
I wasnât sure how long I had been down, but the sun wasnât much further into the sky. Rising to my feet, I glanced around the clearing.
âWhere are they?â
I pointed at the temple. âThey should be inside there.â
âTake the lead,â he ordered.
I walked across the clearing and ascended the steps. The king and his men followed at a distance. He was being wary. I pushed against the doors, but they didnât budge.
âItâs locked,â I said, looking over my shoulder.
Erling nodded his head at Shadamar. âOpen them.â
The sorcerer joined me near the doors and held his right hand up. He flicked his gaze at me. âGet behind me.
