Quite by accident, Cornelius ran into Charles in the library of all places some time after luncheon. It was obvious the man hadnât been reading. In fact, Cornelius had woken him from where he lounged on a low sofa near the fireplace.
âBloody hell,â Charles groused, blinking. âDonât tell me itâs time for dinner already.â He rubbed a hand along the side of his face. âThereâs literally nothing of interest at this damned house party.â
âItâs not. Relax.â Cornelius dumped his friendâs booted feet off the sofa cushions. âGet up, you laze about. What are you doing in here anyway?â He glanced about the large room. Shelves lined the walls. Books of all sorts and genres filled those shelves. Would that he had the time to browse. Yet, the object of his questâAmeliaâwas nowhere to be found. Heâd hunted the house for an hour without success.
âTrying to stay away from Lady Eaton. The woman is a trial, and since she failed to get her hooks into you, sheâs after me.â
âHonestly, you could do worse.â
Charles eyed him askance. âDonât misunderstand me. I donât mind finding a secluded spot for a bit of slap and tickle, and sheâs experienced, but I rather doubt sheâs marriage material, even if sheâs put forth that hint.â
âYou might be right.â Cornelius restrained the urge to laugh at his friendâs predicament. âBy the by, where is your cousin? Surely she can match you with a lady more appropriate for the countess position than the widow.â
âGod, spare me your advice.â Charles rolled his eyes as he sat up. âI am not looking for a countess.â
âThen give your title the full attention it deserves.â He shrugged. âThatâs all Amelia wants from you... right now.â
âIâd rather spend the coin in London instead.â Charles yawned so wide his jaws cracked. âThe last thing I want is to rusticate here. Of course, if Amelia consented to remain, that might change my mind, but you and I both know sheâs been restless of late.â
âHas she?â Cornelius didnât wish to portray a more intimate knowledge to his best friend.
âShe acts as if sheâs distracted, driven, perhaps a bit obsessed.â Charles shrugged. âIt matters not. Iâm not fit for responsibility.â
âYet you donât have that luxury. I hate to tell you but itâs time you matured.â
âDo shut up, old chap.â Charles shook his head. âPerhaps Iâll continue to let Amelia run this pile. Sheâs done well so far. And if she enjoys it, why not?â
âHave you talked with her about it?â Annoyance prickled along Corneliusâ skin. He didnât like her being used as a scapegoat for Charlesâ irresponsible behavior. âNo doubt she has other plans for her life, and well she should.â Again, he looked around. âWhere did you say she was?â Damn, but he was in danger of making a cake of himself, for all he wished was to be in her company.
âI donât know. Do I look like her secretary?â A whine had set up in Charlesâ voice. âI believe she had ice skating and sledding on the agenda for this afternoon.
