CHAPTER NINETEEN

Duri

I was so tired after the carnival that I almost fell asleep standing in the shower. Nothing felt better than slipping on my pajamas and sliding between the cool sheets of the single bed. When Mac came into the room, I was nearly asleep, but I woke up quickly when I heard him talking softly on the phone.

“Hey, Lana.”

I tried not to eavesdrop, but it was hard not to listen.

“Yeah. We had a full day…the beach, a carnival…pretty fun, yeah. My sister and her friend went with us…Yeah? I bet that was nice.” A sigh. “Sure, I miss you.”

Heart sinking, I stuck my fingers in my ear that wasn’t pressed against the pillow and, eventually, my weariness overtook me and I fell asleep.

The next time I opened my eyes, the room was sunny and Mac was on his stomach, snoring, the sheets in a tangle at his feet. He’d slept in a T-shirt and a pair of boxer briefs. The briefs hugged his muscular ass like a second skin, and I quickly tore my eyes away only to see the large expanse of Mac’s toned back where his shirt was rucked up.

Taking a deep breath, I grabbed some clothes and quietly went into the bathroom, remembering to lock the door on Mac’s brother’s side before stripping off and getting dressed.

Mac was still snoring when I came out of the bathroom. I lingered for a moment, just staring at him, heart aching like it always did when I looked at him. Then I tiptoed downstairs, expecting to find Evelyn in the kitchen. Instead, Mac’s mother stood at the stove. She saw me before I could slip away.

“Good morning, Duri.” She smiled.

“Good morning, Mrs. Murdock.”

“I suppose Mac’s still sleeping.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“I’d hoped he’d change his habits in college, but I think it’s hopeless. I’m making some pancakes. They’ll be ready in a few minutes. Come in and keep me company.”

“Would you like some help?” I offered.

“Sure. You can set the table.” She pointed out the silverware drawer and the cabinet where the plates were kept.

“How many people should I set it for?”

“Mac’s dad and brother have already left for work, and Julian spent the night again. So, five.”

Carefully, I lifted the plates out of the cabinet. At times like these, when I could barely reach something, I wished I was taller; but since I met Mac, I’d found that occasionally I really liked being my size. Remembering how he’d held me on the carousel, I bit my bottom lip.

“Did you guys have fun yesterday?” Mac’s mother asked.

“Yes, ma’am. We went to the beach and a carnival. Tonight, we start our job at The Crab Shack.”

She smiled. “That’s marvelous. I guess having you here made Mac a little more accepting of working during the summer.”

“What does he normally do during the summer months?” I asked curiously. I’d asked him in the past, but he’d always said something vague about just hanging out.

“Oh, he sleeps a lot, sometimes sees old high school friends. Plays Fortnight.
