Chapter Eight

ANGELICA STRAUSS

The moment Jamison Felder, aka Wraith, casually walked past my residence, I put an agent on him. The audacity of the man to think he could scope out where I am and not get caught. Well, it’s stupidity in its finest form. Now, here he is, with a gun and a silencer breaking into my home. He was once one of my best agents until he grew a conscience. It’s one reason I’ll never have children. They are too much of a personal risk.

“Hello, Angelica.”

He raises both hands, but he still has that pesky gun in one.

“Drop the gun,” I reply in my best, bored tone. Truth be told, I have so much adrenaline pumping through my system, I’m amazed he can’t hear my heart beating from across the room.

One of his lips quirks up, and he drops the gun onto the floor. It bounces on the carpet with a satisfying thump.

“Back up.”

He takes two steps back, and I use my gun to show I want him further away from me. Jamison takes another two steps back.

“Enough?”

I rise and walk toward him, then pick up the gun.

“A Beretta?” He shrugs and lets his hands drop. “Why now?”

“You’re looking into a friend of mine, and he needs you to stop.”

Tilting my head to the side, I frown. “You have friends?”

Jamison smiles, and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. To the casual observer, you’d say he’s good-looking, muscular, but I know the monster that lurks under the skin he wears. I helped create the thing he’s become.

“Sit,” I command.

Jamison nods and moves to the couch, stretching his arms out across it. I position myself in an armchair facing him.

“You look good, Angelica.”

“So do you. You’ve had work done?”

“Just a peel.”

I cross my legs. “I’ve often thought about getting one of those.”

“You should. It would tighten you up a bit.”

Narrowing my gaze, I sit back in the chair and rest my arm with my gun on my lap, but I keep it pointing in his direction. His gun I place next to me on the seat.

“What friend?”

“Jonathan Stonewall.”

I scoff. “You’re friends with Jonathan Stonewall?”

“Why does that surprise you?”

“It’s not like you run in the same circles… or do you?”

“He’s an old acquaintance.”

“Stonewall has his fingers in a lot of pies.”

Jamison shrugs. “He does.”

I know interrogation with Jamison won’t work. He’ll never break. My best option is to kill him and send his head to Stonewall, but I am curious. There has to be a connection between them. However, as I sit here staring at him, I can’t think of a reason that either would have use for the other.

“Why are you looking into him, Angelica?”

I laugh. “Why?” Jamison nods. “Because I believe he has the current President of the United States under his thumb, and we have seen him with the candidates from both parties for the upcoming election. The man is a snake, and I intend to prove it.”

“Have you shared your concerns with anyone?”

I shake my head slightly.
