CHAPTER 18

AFTER A FEW NIGHTS, ENZO and Alys were beginning to get into a routine. Enzo showed up late again one night, and Alys snapped at him for it. He muttered something quasi-sarcastic, to which she stormed into the streets like a wrathful goddess—but not without smiling back at him over her shoulder. Again, she forgot to cloak her weapons, and, again, he had to remind her. And she still acted somewhat aloof around him, but not nearly as much as she had at the beginning of their partnership.

She was an exceptionally difficult female to get a handle on. Even though she was profusely grateful over his performance the other night, she kept her guard up. Not that she was acting particularly cold, since she was professional and cordial in every way, but an irreverent rapport was established between them. Her warmth was only surface-deep, but he got the feeling that their friendship was deepening at least in some sense.

He thought about the reaper demon she was technically partnered with, and wondered if it was possible for a virago like her to fall in love, or at least soften up enough to let a man get anywhere near her. Not that he was looking for an opening. But he got the feeling that if he came right out and said it: “Hey, Alys, I think you’re sexy. I’d like to take you out, and have a good fuck later on, if you don’t mind,” she would break his nose, but then continue on as if he had never said anything.

“Men are all the same,” was her mantra. And also: “All men are predators.” And while, sure, it was maybe true about him, he was only one man out of how many?

At any rate, he was at least glad to finally be on her good side.

Hailey pinged Enzo on the regular now, and he didn’t mind. He didn’t even mind when the texts were pointless and awkward sometimes, like:

Hi.

Hey. Want me to pick something up for you?

No. I was just saying hi.

Oh. Hi.

Awkward.

But that eventually turned into: Can we talk? I can’t stand being alone right now.

Where are you?

Outside.

Outside where?

By the blue flax field.

When he received that message in the gym during a break, Enzo abandoned his training with Marshall and quickly responded with: Give me five minutes.

He had been trying to trick some information out of Marshall during their sparring sessions, in the hope of figuring out where the prisoners were being kept, but he had come up short so far. Even his walks around the grounds had come up empty of any clues. And for all he knew, the prisoners were being held at an entirely different location, and so he couldn’t assume anything at this point without any leads.

When he arrived at the flax field, Hailey rushed over, sobbing about how she had killed her boyfriend, and how the nightmares wouldn’t leave her alone, and how she had to speak to someone or else she would go crazy.

Thankfully,
