Maya Morgan’s curiosity about the now-known murder of Lauren Mitchell overcame her. Simon was a good listener, but even he lost patience sometimes when his wife wouldn’t let things go that didn’t directly concern her.

Simon had his drawbacks as well but was better at hiding real feelings. His formative years were spent learning that one had no right to think highly of oneself. His parents uprooted him and his two younger sisters when he was four years old. They moved to a remote part of a western state and joined the Watchman Mountain cult. Simon made friends among other children until he reached the age of six. Then the sexes were separated to learn their respective roles in life at Watchman. He learned to obey in quick fashion. At first, he was assigned to carrying small pieces of lumber, jars of nails, and other manageable jobs for the builders. The compound grew as more people joined.

The older he got, the more strenuous physical tasks were given him. Two of the leaders kept close eyes on him. When he complained to his father that he felt he was always being watched, his father berated him for not complying with the rules. His mother remained mute on the subject, but he could tell from the stern look on her face that she agreed with his father. They were committed to the lifestyle. Simon was made to understand that he had no right to pursue any of the young women in the group. He was ordered to keep his focus on expectations that had nothing to do with being drawn to the opposite sex.

Simon’s relief came when he was assigned to the acreage of plants that would feed everyone. He liked the precise order of tilling, planting, and harvesting. The master gardener noticed he had a knack for the assignment and taught him more than the others about various plants. By then, he’d found ways to interact with some boys his own age. They talked in whispers about the girls they wanted to marry. Simon decided to take matters into his own hands the day he motioned with his eyes for Melanie York to come closer. They dismissed the punishment they could receive and found ways to see one another secretively.

The day the cult leader noticed Melanie walking out of line was the day he knew what was going on. Simon received a brutal beating. He never saw Melanie again, even from a distance. He later learned she had been forced to marry the leader himself. With that news, he determined to leave his family and the boundaries behind him. It took another six months before he escaped his prison behind the barriers surrounding him. He chose the middle of the night while everyone slept, waiting for the last light to dim in the nearby lodgings. He stayed in the shadows and managed to climb over the wall where a few rocks had fallen out, giving him a foothold.

His newfound freedom was breathtaking to him.
