D-Day is a term the military sometimes uses for the day of a planned attack. The “D” doesn’t stand for anything except “Day.”

On June 6, shortly after midnight, the attack began. The Allies had hoped for a bright night because of the full moon, but it was cloudy. General Eisenhower decided to strike anyway.

First, paratroopers landed behind enemy lines in France to destroy bridges and cut off escape routes. To confuse the Germans, planes also dropped dummies that looked like men. They were filled with firecrackers.

Then bombers dropped bombs on the German lines. After that, 6,000 boats approached the Normandy beaches, bringing Allied tanks, weapons, and soldiers.
