Only two British infantry divisions met harsh resistance and had to fight their way ashore, supported by the help of naval bombs. Because of the intense German resistance, British commanders had to concentrate their forces and could not drive south as planned to join with the Americans. By the end of the first day, the Allied forces had advanced about five to seven miles (11.5 km) inland.
