“We were a very complete ballclub from top to bottom. We were exceptionally strong up the middle with Larry Bowa and Manny Trillo at second and short, along with Garry Maddox in center and Booney [Bob Boone] behind the plate. We had great hitting with Pete Rose and Bake McBride and Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt and Lonnie Smith. We were well balanced with not a lot of holes in that lineup. Guys stepped up that season too, I mean, the guys who were supposed to come through in the clutch did so whenever they were called upon. Our pitching was good too, guys like Steve Carlton, Dick Ruthven, Bob Walk, and Tug McGraw. Everybody carried their weight on that team. We had a great bench too. Guys just bought into whatever role was available for them, and they made the most of it. We had a lot of stars on that roster, but we also had a lot of character, which kept everybody in check, I think. It was totally unique. One of the great teams of all time, no question.”
