Oriana swept her way along the bustling palace corridor with as much haste as she could muster without looking as though she were hurrying. The palace was unusually busy, what with the news that several hundred minotaur refugees were due to arrive outside the city walls in a matter of hours. The queen had ordered that a camp be erected little more than a mile from the main gate and she had made it quite plain that if each and every refugee didn’t arrive there to find a roof over their heads and food in their bellies then she would want to know the reason why. In order for that to happen scores of workmen and women were working flat out to ensure that no one would be on the receiving end of the queen’s wrath.

Extra guards had also been deployed throughout Aldarris. Rumour had it that Queen Arlana planned to give the minotaurs the freedom of the city. Foolish woman, Oriana thought. With the trouble coming from the Warren, the last thing Aldarris needed was more minotaurs walking about the place. Not that it was her problem. If the queen wishes to make a chopping block for her own neck, it’s no concern of mine.

She reached her destination and, with a brief knock, opened the door to Finian’s study and stepped inside. She was momentarily taken aback by the scene before her. Finian sat on a stool, critically eyeing the boy, Alanson, as the spotty teenager floated several heavy books in front of him in a rather jerky, ungainly dance.

He’s a magi, she thought, mildly surprised. Well, that at least explains why Finian keeps him around.

As soon as Alanson spotted Oriana entering the room the books started spinning round and round, faster and faster, before flying off in different directions and thumping onto the floor.

“No, no, no!” shouted Finian. “Control! You must learn how to control your emotions, boy! If you lose concentration like that every time you see a pretty face, sooner or later you’ll end up burning half the city down. Again!”

Oriana couldn’t help feeling a little sorry for the boy as she watched his face turn a deep shade of crimson. Finian had never been a patient teacher even with her and she had been one of his finest students.

It took him longer than it should have, but eventually Alanson managed to pick up the books and once again began moving them in their floating pattern.

“Am I interrupting, Professor?” Oriana asked.

“Yes,” Finian snapped, “but you may as well stay. He needs to learn to do this regardless of the distraction. Take a seat.”

Oriana walked over to the indicated chair, perhaps with a little more sway to her hips than usual. She noticed, with some small amount of satisfaction, several beads of sweat form upon Alanson’s brow, although this time he managed to maintain control of the books.

“Your student appears to be a little behind in his studies,” she commented, watching the uneven movements of the floating objects.
