Chapter 12

Ryder shut the door in the subtle way one lets out a fart in a crowded room.

He went through the trouble to shut it silently even though the Syndicate knew exactly where he was. It might seem like a waste of a few precious milliseconds to gently close the front door to a home that was being raided, but Ryder knew concealing his tracks was crucial.

There was no way he could outrun the Syndicate.

They had a helicopter, after all. It didn't matter how much numbing agent the woman doused upon his wounds. Nothing would propel him forward fast enough to beat a helicopter in a race.

And even if he did somehow find a motorcycle or some other vehicle he could make good headway on land with, he would have the Chimera Cube to compete with.

Despite some of the more nuanced commands taking a while to figure out, most of the capabilities of the Chimera Cube were easy enough for a toddler to master within a day.

His measly hunting rifle would be no match to their show of force. It would only take one word breathed out of the Syndicate's mouth to have an army of drones and killer humanoids tracking his trail and targeting him with deadly missiles.

In fact, the army of drones was already here.

They had been hovering in the sky since the apocalypse started, and with the Syndicate using them as a hive mind of spy drones aiding them to kill the last of the human population, Ryder knew that the odds were stacked up against him. He sighed as he prepared to sprint forward through the cracked driveway and onto the narrow dirt road that led into the forest. It was pointless for Ryder to put a number to the odds he had of surviving.

But he loved numbers.

His mind constantly thought about statistics, usually revolving around sports games, and the probabilities of his bets paying out or not. The greater the odds against him, the greater the rush would be in the end.

Yet this kind of rush was not the high he was looking for.

He knew his odds of getting out with his life were as close to zero as the chances of him making it to the moon. And when the back door to the farmhouse slammed off its hinges, Ryder's entire body shivered from the vibrations that radiated through him.

The Syndicate was inside.

He heard the screaming of the operatives and the desperate cries of Seth.

Ryder left him to be eaten alive by a monster. He had no time to feel guilty, no time to even absorb the paralyzing fear rocketing through his veins.

There was only one thing left for him to do: run.

As Ryder's bare feet pounded against the cracked pavement of the driveway, he felt his flesh being torn apart. He winced, ignoring the pain in his ankles and upper thigh, two areas that had been badly bruised in the crash.

Despite Barbara giving him much-needed medical attention, his body felt sorer than it did when running away from Seth only hours before.
