This picture, taken by the Magellan space probe on its mission in the early 1990s, shows our neighbouring planet Venus. During its four-year voyage, Magellan captured images of the Face of Venus, which clearly show the presence of volcanoes. Here is an example of a fairly common type of Venusian volcanic feature, known as a ‘tick’. It is a volcano that is probably about thirty kilometres (twenty miles) wide at its peak, encircled by ridges and valleys that radiate down its sides and give it the insect-like appearance from which it gets it name.
