The next few verses are often misunderstood, because too often we donât read them according to ancient culture. When Jesus told the woman to get her husband, she honestly replied that she had no husband. Jesus pressed into what had to be a difficult subject for her. He revealed that she had been married five times and now lived with someone who wasnât her husband. In a modern context, this sounds like she was a flighty gold digger with a habit of divorcingâand now she was living with someone she hadnât married. But divorce was rare at the time, and people certainly didnât divorce casually.
