Chapter Nine

Alyssa’s shouts followed him out into the bright sunshine.

Callum hadn’t wanted to leave her like that, but he had to be strong. This was as much for her future as it was his. Yes, she might have enjoyed what he’d just done to her, but that wasn’t enough yet. Her bond to her pack was still very much intact, and if he let her go there was a good chance she’d run back to them.

He would give her time to cool down, to take her back to her base rate, and then he would go back in and build her up again. He’d do this as many times as it took for her to accept him as hers.

The rest of her pack would be starting to get concerned about her whereabouts by now. The car would almost certainly have been found with the blown tire. Would whoever found it think the occupant was in trouble, or would they just assume the person had gone for help? Would the car be registered to Alyssa’s alpha or someone else in the pack, and so the authorities would know who to contact to find out what happened?

Something moved in the forest to his right. The barn was located in the middle of nowhere, only miles of trees, streams, and bushes for as far as the eye could see. He assumed it must have belonged to a logging company at some point, but obviously wasn’t profitable, so they’d given up and moved on. Piles of unclaimed logs still lay around the cleared area, rugs of green moss, and alien-looking fungi covering the rough bark.

A crack came again, causing his head to jerk toward the sound. He held his breath, listening hard. His nostrils flared, trying to catch the scent of whatever had made the noise. Had it been large? By the sound of the crack, he’d thought it had been. These forests were filled with smaller prey, he often hunted them on the full moon, but there were deer and even bear as well.

Or it could be another wolf shifter.

Thoughts of Alyssa’s pack crept into his mind once more.

Though sure he’d only heard a deer, he left the clearing and headed deeper into the forest. He didn’t want to leave Alyssa for long—with her tied up like that, she might not be able to run, but she was also vulnerable. He doubted any passersby would happen upon her, but he didn’t want to take the risk. Besides, he was impatient to get back to her and continue where he’d left off.

Nothing gave him cause to worry any further, so he turned around and walked back to the barn. He pushed open the doors to find Alyssa in exactly the same position he’d left her in, with her glaring at him furiously.

“So good of you to come back,” she said, her voice thick with sarcasm.

“You should know I wouldn’t leave you for long. I just thought you needed to take a few minutes to cool off.
