Chapter 14

Mornings at the ranch started early, the type that made Evelyn pry open her tired eyes wishing she had shots of espresso already swimming in her system before she even made any attempt to function. Then the smell of bacon, eggs, and brewed coffee would hit her, a combination that made her mouth water and brain perk up, enough to scramble to the kitchen and check the source.

The first time she had seen Lance standing by the stove, wearing only joggers and a white shirt, she had stared for the longest time, close to ogling before she remembered herself—and remembered her daughter. But Jenny didn’t wake up early easily, making Evelyn reluctant to leave the ranch for work until Lance had to shoo her away.

“She’ll be fine. Give her time to adjust. The important thing is that you’re both here and safe.”

That was the mantra that got her through the week, when the workload didn’t stop and she had no choice but to get with the program. Coming back to the ranch at night left her a sense of wonder as she always found the two in the barn, talking to his animals and laughing over inside jokes. It tightened her chest before softening her insides, Jenny’s smile at whatever Lance was a telling relief that swept over Evelyn’s initial worries. She tried her best to adjust to their rhythm, hopeful when Jenny started acknowledging her presence upon her nightly return. But there were no dinners together yet.

“She’ll adjust,” Lance repeated, wishing Jenny a good night before the girl trudged to bed.

“I know she will.” She inhaled deeply, then let all the tension of the day out. “Thanks for dinner. That was good.”

“You’re welcome, Eve. How was work?”

“The usual. Any update?”

“None.”

“None from Damian, either.” She bit her lip, then caught his gaze…or rather, caught the way he was looking at her like he wanted to devour her. Lust shot in her system, the air thickening when he slowly, effectively trapped her against the kitchen counter. Heat radiated from his large body, so close to hers that she only needed to lean in and press…rub, skin to skin, a friction that would be so delicious. She shook her head, fighting it.

“Lance…”

“I know,” he said before she could finish, swallowing. But he did lean in, exhaling hotly against her cheek, maybe taking her scent in. “Not yet. I miss you.”

“I miss you, too,” she admitted, then realized how badly she did.

They stayed suspended like that for the longest time, caught in a moment of longing, tortured by the knowledge that they were within reaching distance but couldn’t reach out for each other. It was Lance who eventually stepped back, his jaw tense and the huge bulge visible in his pants. It was him who said goodnight first, too, his voice strangled and filled with so much raw emotion that it hurt a little.

The days flew by with the same routine, the same yearning. The walls kept getting chipped away whenever she
