Chapter Eight

GALEN.

Talia went straight to her room with Sarah in tow to start packing as soon as we got home. She seemed excited about joining me on the trip to Montana. The circumstances could have been better, but I hoped the time together would bring us closer together.

“Almost ready?” I called out, glancing at my watch to make sure we stayed on schedule.

“Ten more minutes. Fifteen tops.” Talia shouted back from her room.

We had a long drive and I still needed to pick up with Theo before we left. I also needed to swing by the bar to make sure things were under control and grab a few things from my apartment above it. But we could spare a few extra minutes.

There was one other thing I needed to do before we got on the road - get my father’s advice.

I moved with purpose, eager to get his advice, only to hit the brakes when the soft sounds of snoring reached me through his bedroom door. As much as I hated to wake him, I knew he’d be upset if I didn’t.

“Dad.” With a soft knock, I turned the doorknob and let myself in. “Hey, I’m sorry to wake you but the council called an all alpha summit.”

“Mandatory?” My father rubbed the sleep from his eyes, pushed himself up to a seated position and leaned back against the headboard.

It pained me to watch him deteriorate before my eyes with no medical explanation or cure. He’d been a picture of health and a strong leader every day of his life and then one day he just wasn’t.

It should have been him at the summit. Not me.

“Galen, I can feel the stress radiating off you. Bring the chair over here and sit down.” He pointed a crooked finger at the ladderback chair in the corner of the room. “There, now tell me what’s on your mind.”

“Apart from the obvious?” I laughed off the budding stress and anxiety of representing the Long Claw pack at a national meeting and settled into the chair at my father’s bedside.

“The obvious is as good a place to start as any.” He reached for the glass of water on a small rolling tray.

“Well, for starters, you should be the one going to this meeting. You're still the alpha, Dad.” I rested my elbows on my knees and propped my head in my head with a defeated sigh. “What if I’m not cut out for this? What if I screw up on the national stage?”

“The summit is the perfect time and place for you to officially assume control of the pack.” He curled his knobby fingers into a ball and coughed in his fist. “You’re my son, which means you are meant for this.”

“How can you be so sure?” I used the tips of my fingers to massage my temples and stave off the headache barreling toward me like a runaway train. “Everything has fallen apart since you got sick.”

“And you think that’s your fault?” His eyes were clouded over with a milky white film, but his gaze pierced my soul nonetheless.
