Cait

After getting back to our room, I undressed and showered, all with the help of Roman, of course. He’d remained by my side, allowing me to absorb what had transpired over the last—and longest—twenty-four hours of my life. The extreme high of bonding with him had nearly been overshadowed by the challenge issued from Cassie.

While I still felt sorrow for the life taken, I wasn’t going to let it ruin me so thoroughly. I’d been through too much to get where I was, and there was still plenty of fight left to get through before there would be much peace.

Dwelling on the choices of others wasn’t going to make anything better. My mate and pack needed me to be strong. I had to be the alpha female they needed. One who didn’t wallow over killing another when it was the only option.

Those were the realizations I’d come to while I’d taken my time rinsing off for the second time that night. Those thoughts would be what helped me move forward. Well, those and the support of Roman.

After I brushed and braided my hair for bed, I found him already laying under the sheet with his arms behind his head and eyes full of concern.

“I’m okay,” I said as I crawled onto the oversized mattress.

A crease formed between his brows. “That’s what worries me.”

“It shouldn’t. I know we’re more alike than either of us realized in the beginning and you’ve been through the same challenge, but you didn’t have me when you went through yours. Well, not me in particular, but a mate. Between my wolf, our newly formed bond, and my drive to be okay for the pack, I’m just stubborn enough to be able to push beyond the events of today. Maybe I won’t be okay every day, but tonight I am.”

By the time I was finished speaking, I’d crawled on top of him and positioned my legs around his hips with only the sheet separating our bodies.

His hands came down from behind his head and fingers splayed over my ribs. “Just remember that you don’t always have to be okay. You are allowed to break and feel and anything else.”

“I know and I will, but not now. Right now, we need to figure out who this Demi person is and what she is trying to do. I didn’t even know hybrids existed. Does that make her more powerful or less?”

He grinned and shook his head but answered my question anyway. “Depends on the parents. It’s different every time one is born. The council tried to outlaw relationships outside of individual races, but when true mate bonds appeared, there was nothing they could do.”

I leaned forward until our faces were only inches apart. “I bet you’re glad I didn’t stay human.”

Roman flipped me over without notice and tugged the sheet away from us as he came down on top of me. Neither of us had any clothes on, and our bond flared within my chest as we laid skin-to-skin.

“I would have loved you all the same no matter if you had a wolf or not.
