Gatekeeper: “Who is this?”

Cin: “Oh, hi, tell him it’s Cin.”

Gatekeeper: “Cin who?”

Cin: “Cin Fabré.”

Gatekeeper, suspicious: “What, exactly, is this about?”

Cin, firmer: “Ma’am, it’s a personal business call.”

Gatekeeper: “Does he know you?”

Cin, brightly: “Well, if you tell him it’s Cin from VTR, that should ring a bell, thank you!”

Gatekeeper: “Well, I’m his wife and I’m not familiar with VTR.”

Cin, closing in: “Oh, that’s okay. John is familiar, and I’m returning his call.”

Gatekeeper, defenses down: “Hmm, okay, hold on.”

[Passes the phone to John]

John: “Hello?”

Cin: “Hi, John, it’s Cin. I’m getting back to you from VTR Capital.”

John: “VTR Capital … (pause) … Who?”

Cin, authoritatively: “We are a boutique investment firm on Wall Street, specializing in IPOs, private placements, secondary offerings, and occasional penny stocks.”

John: “I’ve never heard of VTR.…”

Cin: “Look, John, I get it. You are used to the same type of brokers calling you with the same stock picks with the same average returns. What we do is bring you unique investment ideas that your current broker does not have access to, such as IPOs and private placements. John, when was the last time your broker got you involved in an IPO?”

John, conceding: “Well, never.”

Cin: “Exactly! That’s the reason I am calling, John, to give you an opportunity for when we do have something that makes sense, which you’ll never get from your current advisers, and to make sure we are free to give you a call. Are you still at 1234 ABC Street?”

John: “Yes, I am.”

Cin: “Great, this is what I will do. I will tailor a package just for you, send it out, and get back to you in the next couple of weeks once you have had a chance to review it. And if you don’t like what you read, just let me know and we will part as friends. Is that fair?”

John: “Yeah, that’s fair.”

Cin: “John, I really don’t want to waste your time, and I want to bring you something that tickles your belly, so can you tell me about a few stocks you’re currently holding onto?”

John, retreating: “Uh, I’m not sure I’m comfortable giving you that information.”

Cin, persuasive: “John, I understand. Again, all I want is to make sure that the only shot I have to impress you with is something that makes sense for you. Just name a few. Are you a blue-chip, conservative, options?”

John: “I have some Cisco, Hewlett-Packard, IBM.”

Cin: “Okay. Are you open to diversifying a bit?”

John: “Yeah, it just depends on what it is.”

Cin, praising: “I’m glad to hear we’re speaking the same love language, John. Is it fair to say that you have at least a couple mil in the market?”

John, flattered: “Oh, not that much.”

Cin: “Would you say about a mil?”

John, abashed: “Hmm, I’m not sure.”

Cin, cajoling: “You and I both know you are aware to the nickel of what you have in the market, John. Just give me a ballpark. Three-quarters of a mil?”

John, appeased: “Yeah, that’s fair.”

Cin: “Okay,
