RULE NINE:

The Full Moon Is Not Your Friend

The full moon affects wolves while leaving cougars and bears, and indeed every other known shifter species across the world, completely unchanged. No one knows why this is. It is annoying, of course, to be changed whether you like it or not, and cuts into the social calendar in irritating ways, but that is not the only issue. When you first become a wolf, it can be hard to find your humanity beneath the new and exciting wolf hormones coursing through your lupine blood. That’s why accidents happen, that’s why you may eat a few chickens, that’s why it’s important to have good people around you. But, after those initial teething problems, you will have the same intelligence and self-control as a wolf that you do as a human. Except on Full Moon. For whatever reason, the full moon always brings out the berserker wolf. It’s not as if you forget who and what you are—you can still control yourself to a great extent—but it’s harder. So very hard. On full moon nights, the scent of prey on the air is intoxicating, along with the desire to run with the pack and howl at the moon. The full moon is like a drug. You are never more wolf than under its rays and even the most experienced of us is capable of doing something dumb. You want to hunt, to fight, and, yes, to do other wolfy things with wolves of the opposite gender (or the same if you’re so inclined). Full moon is a frisky time in all respects and more pups are conceived on full moons than at any other time of the month.

“We’re on our way out now. We’re having dinner first, but if you change your mind…” Grace said pleadingly over the phone.

“Like I said, I can’t. Sorry, sweetie.”

“I know, I know. I’m just saying that if you change your mind, you’ll know where we’ll be!”

“I won’t, I’m sorry.” I hated this part about being a wolf, missing out on a night with the girls because it was a full moon and I would shortly be four-legged and furry until sunrise.

“Are you seeing the new guy?” asked Grace, excitedly. “Ben?”

“Actually, I am seeing Ben,” I said. Which was a convenient excuse that Grace would accept. It had the advantage of being mostly true because Ben was indeed coming around, albeit only briefly, to drop off my coffee table, which he had fixed in his home workshop (again, so cool and sexy).

“Well, have fun.” I could hear Grace smirking over the phone. “What am I saying? You’ll probably have more fun than me.”

“Here’s hoping.”

As I hung up, I glanced at the clock. It was early yet. One of the advantages of being a wolf in San Diego was that you got a decent amount of daylight—the nights were not so long as in some places. I don’t mind being a wolf, but I object to anything that takes away my choice.
