Healings

Dane

I was desperately trying to find a way to save Petra. But unfortunately, her advanced hearing abilities weren't working. She couldn't hear my words of encouragement and wouldn't look me in the eye. I knew that she would be safe if I could just get her to listen and trust me. Even though I had removed the arrow and cauterized the wound so she wouldn't bleed out, the internal damage was killing her. And it was already too late. I could feel her slipping away, and then suddenly, she wasn't there anymore. It felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. I wanted to howl in anguish, but no sound would come out.

The marksman shot their target precisely, grazing Petra’s heart and causing a wound that would ultimately prove fatal. I didn't know what else to do. She couldn't make a long journey back to the top of the mountain, and moving her now would likely hasten her death. But sitting here, watching her die, was also not a viable option. I had to do something!

Ryder's voice held a note of panic as he gripped Petra's hand and looked at me. "What will happen if we call out to the feral wolves?” he asked.

"What do you mean?”

"You know, Dane, that old tale about the feral wolves on Magic Mountain. It's said that they have the ability to heal shifter alphas. I'm only telling you what the old wives say," he said.

"It's just a silly fairy tale, nothing more than a made-up story. Canines gone completely feral won’t be able to take care of an alpha properly enough for them to heal—it doesn't even make sense. There's no way that would work since she's not even in wolf form." I explained.

“It's the only thing we have left to try,” Ryder interjected.

I nodded my head reluctantly. “I agree, we can't just sit here and watch her die." I had always been a man of action, not one to be swayed by folk tales. But in this case, I was willing to put aside my skepticism for Petra's sake.

"I don't know," Ryder said, shaking his head. "And I admit that it does sound crazy. It's a huge risk, but it doesn't seem there is anything else we can do to save Petra’s life. So if you know of another way to keep her alive, then, by all means, tell me."

But I didn't.

I didn't know what else to do to help Petra, and her time was running out. There was nothing surgically I could do here in the woods, even if I had the skills of a healer. We could not return to our pack without her dying along the way.

As I saw now, there were only two choices left—neither of which was good.

We could sit here with Petra, holding her and trying to keep her comfortable while waiting and hoping her body would eventually kick in to save itself. Or we could take a considerable risk and give her to the wolves.
