Chapter Eleven

They returned to the grocery store where, less than twenty-four hours ago, Hedi claimed the life of his second victim. Jack's car was no longer in the lot, so his corpse had obviously been discovered and removed from the premises.

“I have an old shopping list from Mrs. Vonnegut,” Amaria announced, holding up a slip of paper. “Rather than make a new list, she told me to grab the items from this one. I guess you can always use toilet paper and eggs, right?”

“Definitely,” Hedi replied, even though his experience with the former was limited. Naughts had some excellent inventions, and the toilet was one of the best. If he returned to ancient China, he would have to practice opening portals as easily as his brother. It was worth traveling through time just to use a toilet.

“I'm probably torturing you, taking you grocery shopping with me,” Amaria remarked. “I'm sure you'd rather be anywhere but here.”

“I already told you... I'd rather be anywhere with you,” he corrected her. Glancing at her shopping list, he asked, “Er... what exactly is a scallion? Is that some kind of shellfish?”

“No, silly, it's a green onion!” Amaria exclaimed as she pushed her cart through aisles of produce. “You've never heard the word scallion before?”

Technically, Hedi was unfamiliar with most English words, but his language spell offered no translation for “scallion.” He also didn't know what “root beer” was, but he kept the thought to himself as he followed her through the store.

As she picked up a sizable bundle of green onions, Amaria said, “We're like an old married couple, shopping together.”

“I don't know about that,” Hedi said. “If we were an old married couple, you'd probably be doing all the shopping, and I'd be sitting on my ass. At the moment, I'm just a guy who's going out of his way to impress a girl.”

“That... is sadly accurate.” Amaria's shoulders popped into a shrug. “You know, after my mom died, Megan and I took over all the shopping. My dad just didn't want to do it... or couldn't. I bet he wouldn't know what a scallion is either. The other day, he thought a green pepper was called a mango.”

Hedi stated with confidence, “A mango is a fruit.” Sometimes, his language spell didn't fail him.

“Exactly! I'm glad you know the difference,” Amaria said. “My dad is hopeless when it comes to cooking and keeping the refrigerator stocked. If we left it up to him, we probably would have starved after Mom died.”

Hedi studied Amaria's shopping list over her shoulder. He was stumped by the word “Oreo.” Once again, his mind offered no translation. When they reached the cookie aisle, he finally understood—Oreo was a brand, not a product.

“I sometimes wonder if I'll see her again,” Amaria said. “I'm talking about my mom. I don't mean to be gloomy all the time, but the thought crosses my mind a lot. When we die, are we reunited with our loved ones in the afterlife, or does everything just.
