CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The crunch of the leaves that came from the Red Fox Trail was accompanied by heavy footsteps, which told me that at least we didn’t have to find shelter from some sort of hungry animal like a bear or a wildcat. They were common in this area.

After I called Tucker Pyle, he told me to stay put and avoid moving and that he’d call me back.

Hank had asked Abby to go up to the office and both grab a flashlight from Henry and bring him here. Then he told the rest of the Laundry Club Ladies and me to stay put until Tucker called back. Tucker might need to hear our statements over the phone, since the roads were completely closed and they couldn’t get here themselves.

Hank sent Waldo Willy back up to the campground, telling him sternly enough to keep his mouth shut that even I knew Hank meant business.

Honestly, Hank didn’t want anyone else at the campground to know that we found what we assumed to be Keisha. All they needed to know was that her phone had pinged.

We sat on a little bench next to the canoe stand that the storm had not touched.

“It’s so strange how the kayaks were all thrown about but that was it,” Betts pointed out.

“When I was a little girl, the neighbor’s trailer got dee-stroyed during a tornado, but everyone else in the trailer park”—Dottie flung her hands out wide in a gesture—“nothin’.”

“Tornadoes are awful,” Queenie said with a tsk.

The footsteps were getting louder and commanded everyone’s attention.

“I hope it’s not Mary Elizabeth coming down here to check on us and see what’s taking so long,” I said with a worried look as I turned and faced the Laundry Club Ladies. “That’s the last thing she needs to remember on this festive wedding day.”

Abby reported that she’d glanced inside the recreational building when she’d gone up to get Henry and the flashlights. She added that she thought everyone had gone to bed now that the storm was cleared.

Abby and Betts had given Mary Elizabeth and Hank’s parents their bungalow so at least everyone had someplace to sleep.

“I can hear Mary Elizabeth now at church when someone asks her about you,” Dottie said, trying to make light of what was happening around us. “‘May-bell-ine had the prettiest wedding, even though there was a tornado, and a dead body warshed up on the banks of the stream where she provides sports, but all in all, it was a gorgeous ceremony.’”

“She does always try to see the good in each situation,” Betts acknowledged.

“And there will be some closure to the Collier family,” Queenie said, pointing out that the months-long search for their daughter would end now.

A faint outline of a silhouette appeared from the trail, thanks to the light of the moon, which shone brightly in the clear sky.

I shook my head, knowing tomorrow was going to be beautiful, but after finding Keisha, I shook the notion of what was supposed to happen out of my head.
