Chapter 29
Alfie Moss looked far from happy when he opened the door to Dan and Zoe at ten past seven that evening. He stood with his feet apart, arms folded, bracing himself.
âWhat do you want?â he said, his voice cold and unwelcoming. âCome to stir up more trouble, have you?â
âWeâre just doing our job,â Dan said. âWeâve got a few more questions for you and your partner.â
âIâll bet you have.â Alfie stood firm, filling the doorway. âI gather you asked more than enough questions when you were here earlier. Youâve upset Becky; now youâre upsetting me. Iâm asking you to leave us alone.â
âSorry,â Dan said, even though he wasnât. âCanât do that, Iâm afraid. We wonât keep you long, but we need to step inside. Unless, of course, youâd prefer to have a conversation here on the doorstep ⦠let your neighbours listen in?â
Alfie turned down the corners of his mouth, expressing reluctance, but stepped aside anyway and let them in. Becky was sitting on the couch, biting a fingernail. Her eyes were red and her cheeks blotchy.
Zoe sat next to her. âHave you talked to Alfie?â she said. âAbout what was discussed earlier?â
Becky nodded, fresh tears brimming in her eyes. âI didnât have any choice. Your colleagues made sure of that.â
On the other side of the room, Alfie threw himself into the leather armchair. There was no sign of the children.
âAre your kids not here?â Zoe asked.
Becky shook her head. âAlfieâs mum came and got them. Theyâre having a sleepover at her house tonight. We thought it was best ⦠you know, give us some time to talk.â
Alfie sat up, his knee jigging as he glared at them. âYou think youâre clever, donât you?â he said. âHappy are you? Now that youâve put the cat among the pigeons?â
âIf youâre referring to us asking Becky about the messages she sent to Kevin Spriggs, our intention wasnât to be clever,â said Dan. âFar from it. We found out sheâd been in touch with him, so naturally we were obliged to ask her about it. Itâs hardly our fault she hadnât told you about the messages.â
âWell, sheâs told me now,â Alfie said, his voice strong and blustering. âI canât say that Iâm happy about it, but weâve discussed it, and I know Becky ⦠so I understand why she did it.â
âWhyâs that then?â said Dan.
âBecause sheâs got a kind heart and she felt sorry for him. Becky cares about people. Itâs one of the things I love about her, as a matter of fact. So, if youâve come here thinking youâve managed to drive a wedge between us, you can think again.â
âIt was never our intention to cause problems between you,â Zoe said. âAnd Iâm glad youâve talked things through.â
âDonât patronise me,â Alfie said. âI donât care whether youâre glad or not. What I want to know is, why have you come back? What do you want now?â
âTo ask Becky whether anyone can confirm that she was here, at home, on Wednesday afternoon.
