GABRIEL

She was finally in his bed. Their bed.

Gabriel had been going to sleep thinking of her since they met earlier in the year. Thinking of what she could be dreaming of, if she was comfortable in her cold suite, if she was ever lonely. Those moments he was glad that as unpleasant as she was with him, she was worse with the others at the palace, so he knew she didn’t have any company. That ease had also made it possible for Gabriel to think of how sexy she was when she was telling him off instead of wanting to be sick that another was touching her, that she was allowing another to touch her. He wasn’t a violent person but the thought of her with another sent a deathly cool through him. It was part of the reason he was glad those other men she’d been with were nowhere to be found, were nobody’s in her life now.

With her beside him now, he didn’t have to think of the negatives of what could be any longer. He was able to focus solely on her, on her beauty, both inside and out. It’d led to the easiest sleeps of his life.

Dreams of Ashtyn’s hair blowing in the wind while she rode a horse, Gabriel chasing after her plagued him. Dreams of her laughs as they ran through the greens, as they tackled one another to the ground, as they got dirty everywhere. Dreams of them washing that dirt off one another. Dreams of them finishing work at the palace daily, feeling accomplished and proud, then meeting before the hearth in their living space to speak of everything and nothing at all while they prepared their meals. They were the most peaceful pictures his mind could conjure, and all a life Gabriel was working them toward.

He’d only woken because the specific dream of washing one another had been too much and his body had needed the release. He hadn’t allowed it for himself when he awoke, but watching her sleep took over his time until he could fall back asleep.

That was, until a hand smacked into his chest and unease filled the room. Then Ashtyn tossed around, eyes fluttering uncontrollably as she called out incomprehensible words that were clearly upsetting.

“Ash.” He shook her shoulder softly so as not to frighten her.

When her head tossed around once more and she squealed like she was afraid of whatever she was seeing, Gabriel became forceful with his efforts. “Ashtyn, love, wake up. Wake up.”

Her eyes popped open, but they were glazed over.

“It’s me, beautiful. It’s Gabriel. I’m not going to hurt you.” Her body sank into the sheets as her eyes closed once more before finding his. “I’d never hurt you.”

“I know,” she whispered, voice hoarse from sleep.

He hovered over her, wanting to remain the thing she focused on as she came completely out of her nightmare. “You want to talk about it?”

Her head barely moved, but it was answer enough.

“Do you have nightmares often?”

She shrugged.
