Chapter 7

You Didn’t Think to Mention This Before?

Connor’s phone rang three times during the drive home, and by the time she angled the car into the driveway, his buoyant mood had deflated. It had hurt his ego to pass the phone over each time he hadn’t known the answer to a question, and it had annoyed Emma to hear the interest in each caller’s voice when they had realised the two of them were together after hours. They weren’t entitled to an explanation, but that hadn’t meant that she hadn’t wanted to offer one.

“Your bike’s in the garage,” she said as she stepped out of the car. “The boys arranged that for you.”

There was something a little pathetic about the plastic bag he carried. It was all he had to represent the last two weeks of his life. She had returned his keys to him this morning, and he withdrew these from the bag. As he unlocked the door, she held her breath. She wanted him to recognise something, to feel at home, but a lot had changed here in the last few years.

They stepped into the hallway and he gazed around, his expression inscrutable. Eventually, he touched the rim of a large terracotta pot then trailed his fingers along the spine of the indoor palm that it held. Both were a new addition. She’d been with him the day he’d bought them from a regional garden centre and, for a moment, when he glanced at her, his brows drawn together, she wondered if he remembered that. But the moment passed and he led the way to the kitchen.

He blinked at the stack of mail she’d placed on the counter next to his landline phone. There was a bowl nearby that Emma had emptied of fruit before the pieces could rot. He went straight to the fridge where various magnets secured photographs to the freezer door. She waited in the doorway. Her gaze flickered to the photograph that she’d tucked between the pages of a cookbook that he typically used as a coaster. That would require too much information too soon.

“Would you like a drink?” he asked, opening the fridge to check what was in stock. “Sav Blanc, right?” When she didn’t answer he turned.

“Right,” she whispered.

He straightened very slowly, and she didn’t dare move.

“Did you…do you…?”

“I don’t know,” he said quietly. “It was automatic. I wasn’t really thinking what I was saying.”

She tried not to appear as hopeful, as joyful, as she felt. Was his memory returning? Was it possible that the first memory to return to him was one of her? “Did your doctor explain how it would come back? Is this how it’s going to happen?”

“I don’t know,” he said again.

“Okay.” She stepped farther into the kitchen, her hands up, palms out. “Let’s not get carried away, then. You’ve had a long day. I’ll fix the drinks. Have a look around, kick off your shoes. You’re home now.”

They changed positions in front of the fridge. He touched
