Chapter

Thirteen

Business at the shop was brisk. Jenny had put it on every conceivable social media platform, and her phone constantly tinged with queries that would annoy Jess. Jenny got excited over every one. She was also brilliant with the customers so Jess mostly took the money when they had a group turn up, and the rest of the time she made potions and practiced others in the locked kitchen.

Today there was a full mini bus from the retirement community on the edge of town.

“Be a dear and hand me one of those soaps,” a gray-haired, smartly dressed resident pointed to a table surrounded by the rest of the group.

“Certainly.” Jenny reached behind the counter and pulled out the same soap. This is our best-selling item, so I keep extra in case they sell out.”

The woman smiled her thanks. “My friend Agnes mentioned how good it was for age spots, and I can’t resist trying it.”

“Oh, yes. I guarantee it does work, but goodness me you don’t really need it.”

“Aren’t you the sweetest? A woman always likes to improve herself. Even at eighty years old,” she added in a stage whisper.

“No! You can’t possibly be that age.”

“I truly am. Now what else do you have that you guarantee?”

And that was how the hour went, while the group shopped as if this might be the only chance they would ever have to come to the store, and not something they did monthly. Watching Jenny at work, Jess was impressed. In fact, she was impressed by everything her assistant did and was slowly getting used to the bubbly sweetness that made her think of southern sweet tea. An acquired taste, there was a positive quality that also soothed.

Waving as the last woman left, Jenny leaned against the door and grinned across the room. “Whew! That was amazing.”

“Amazing” wasn’t the word Jess had for the whirlwind that the retirees created en masse. “You were amazing. The way you handle them is amazing. Can I make you a cup of tea?”

Jenny’s eyes widened. “I…I can do it.”

Jess waved away the protest a little embarrassed that she usually let her assistant do all the menial tasks and offering this once had actually shocked Jenny. “I’m capable of making tea, and you deserve a break.”

“My feet thank you,” Jenny called as Jess went out to the kitchen.

On a whim, Jess shut the door and pulled out the cauldron. Five minutes later she carried out two steaming cups of tea. Tucked under her arm was a vial. Jenny sat on a stool behind the counter, checking receipts.

“I hope you like the tea. It’s cinnamon, ginger, and chamomile.” Jess handed her the generous mug and then the vial. “Soak your feet in this tonight. Mom swore by it, and I know the fresher it is the more potent it is.”

Jenny put her cup on the counter and removed the stopper to smell. Her lower lip quivered. “You made me Lissa’s Lavender Foot soak.”

Jess looked away and pretended to study the pile of receipts.
