Chapter

Fifteen

Due to the drama in town, potential customers had stayed home which made the afternoon drag. Jenny refused to go upstairs and take advantage of the downtime, preferring to work to keep her mind occupied.

Hoping that meant she wouldn’t be interrupted too much, and feeling much the same way, Jess perched at the counter and using the shop laptop decided to do a bit more sleuthing without Maestro’s input.

Gabriel Lester, she typed, adding stock broker.

There were plenty of Gabriel Lesters, but only one was a stock broker. She clicked on the link and his face immediately appeared. Bingo!

A well-known stockbroker, Gabriel Lester had done very well for himself in Portland. He left a prominent company to start up on his own a few years ago. His own company was doing well and he had a couple of staff members. Apart from a few paragraphs, taken from the local newspaper about his prowess, the only mention was that he went to a prestigious school and had been top of his class.

She searched for siblings of Gabriel Lester. He was an only child to Marie and Howard Lester. Wealthy jetsetters, they traveled a lot. If you didn’t count the wealth, it appeared that she had a few things in common with Gabriel—like being left to their own devices. Although, she imagined that Gabriel probably had nannies.

She shook her head. This was no time to be empathizing about lonely childhoods. Not when Gabriel potentially faced a murder charge. What she needed was the deceased's details, and to talk to the moving company. It was imperative that the men vouched for the timing. She had noted the branding on the truck and deciding that it couldn’t hurt Brodie’s investigation if she searched for and found the company online. Pulling out her phone, Jess dialed the number listed on the website.

“Getting you there in one piece. How can I help you?” A friendly woman said after only a couple of rings.

“Good afternoon. I’d like to check times for a delivery that happened this morning, please.”

“Where was the delivery, ma’am?”

“Good Fortune. Near Destiny. Under the name of Gabriel Lester.”

“Yes, I see that it was all delivered on time. Was there a problem?”

“Oh, no. The men were wonderful. It’s a personal matter, but I just wondered what time they left Good Fortune.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t have that information in the system.”

“I see. Are they back yet? Perhaps I could speak to the driver?”

“I’m sorry, ma’am they had another job. I could get them to phone Mr. Lester on their return.”

“No, that’s okay. Thank you for your help.” Jess quickly ended the call. While she didn’t feel that she was doing anything wrong, Brodie might not be impressed if she took it any further, and Gabriel, if he wasn’t being charged, would wonder what the heck she was up to if they phoned him to check.

Stretching, she yawned.

Jenny popped out from behind a tower of handmade soaps. “You should go on home, Jess.”

“Won’t you be nervous about being here on your own?”

“I haven’t until now, and once I lock up I’ll be fine.
