Chapter

Fifteen

O fficer Fine was seated by a window, a half-eaten steak on the plate in front of him as he read a book. He glanced up as soon as they entered and watched them head his way.

Theo nodded to him. “Hey, Brodie, could we disturb you after dinner?”

“Sure.” Officer Fine pointed to the chairs beside him. “There’s plenty of room. Take a seat now if you like.”

“We were about to order,” Theo explained.

“I don’t mind sharing the table—unless you’d rather be alone?”

It was a question, yet underneath, Jess heard a challenge. If it wasn’t a laughable idea, she could almost imagine they were fighting over her.

“We’re not together,” she insisted. “Well, we are, but it’s not a date or anything. We only met today, so it’s just business.”

Both men studied her, and she looked away, deciding that they could sort out who was dining with whom between them.

“In that case, take a seat if you’d like to.”

Jess deliberately took the seat opposite him, which meant that Theo had to sit beside Officer Fine no matter which chair he chose. They sat there awkwardly for a moment until the waitress dropped off a couple of menus.

She eyed the group with interest. “I’ll be back in a short while to take your orders.”

“Thanks, Trixie,” Theo said.

“Any recommendations?” she asked the men.

“The steak is always good, and so are the lamb racks,” Officer Fine suggested before forking in a mouthful of meat.

The plate, even half-eaten, looked huge, and Jess had a hankering for something fresh. When Trixie returned, Jess ordered the chicken and avocado salad while Theo chose the steak and baked potato.

By the time the food came, Officer Fine was done and they had discussed weather and her trip from Portland.

“Don’t hurry with your meals,” he insisted. “You two eat and I’ll finish my book.”

Jess was glad about that because she was starving. She’d picked at food since she arrived and hadn’t eaten a decent meal for days. The salad was everything she craved, and she ate like no one was watching. Except they kinda were.

“It looks like you enjoyed that,” Trixie stated when she came to clear the plates.

“That was absolutely delicious.”

She winked. “I’ll tell the chef—which happens to be me mostly. I guessed you are Lissa’s daughter, and we took bets that you wouldn’t need any food for weeks.”

“That is so true, and I am thankful. In fact, I feel guilty for not eating at home.”

“Don’t you give it a thought. Just tell those ladies that you enjoyed everything before you dispose of it. Trash day down your street is tomorrow.” She winked again and took an armful of plates back to the kitchen.

Jess looked around to check no one had overheard, then turned back to the men. “I don’t suppose either of you would like to take some of that food off my hands?”

They both laughed and shook their heads.

“The last thing you need is for that group to see you handing out their food. Better do as Trixie said and chuck it out.
