Chapter Eight

Not too long after, the cavalry arrived. By the cavalry, Ebony meant Ben.

Ben arrived only ten minutes after Nate had left, and because he knew Ebony better than nearly anyone else, he brought a box of doughnuts and a pizza. “When you get worried, Ebony,” he said as he popped the food down on the counter, “you get hungry. And if there’s one thing that scares me, it’s you when you’re hungry. God knows what you will find to eat. You’re worse than my kids, and they eat mud for heaven’s sake.”

Despite the fact Ebony was still admittedly pining after Nate, she couldn’t deny that she felt far safer now that Ben was back by her side. Nate had his own style – his own way of dealing with problems, which usually involved the head-on, determined, forthright style of a knight. Ben, on the other hand, was worlds apart. He was loose, he had probably seen it all in his time, and he knew that sometimes it was just important to sit down with his partner and share a doughnut and coffee rather than try to desperately and fruitlessly search for solutions.

Plus, he always had an attitude that suggested that no matter how dire the problem was, it couldn’t be that bad. If the local cemetery were overrun by ghosts who’d nicked into the local hardware store and stolen all the chains so that they could rattle them all well into the night, Ben would just shrug, go around with a wheelbarrow and pick up all the chains, and read the ghosts their magical rights. He wouldn’t overreact. In fact, if he was guilty of anything, it was under reaction. Even though he could still appreciate when something was serious, he would never let that serious thing get under his skin. If Nate was determined, then Ben was steady, and Ebony could use steady right now. After all, everything else in her world, from her dreams to the floor of her store, kept on shaking and flickering in and out of existence.

She also needed coffee and doughnuts, a fact that Ben had already catered for.

“It always happens to you, doesn’t it, Eb? You always get to have fantastic, crazy, downright unbelievable adventures,” Ben dumped a doughnut into his coffee, a chunk of the lurid green icing, which was covered in hundreds and thousands, separating and sinking to the bottom of his drink. Even though he noticed, he didn’t attempt to fish the sugary iceberg out – he just stirred it in with his finger, ignoring the fact the coffee was still hot and steaming.

Ebony gave a soft snort. “I am happy to change places with you any day if you would like some more adventure in your life.”

Ben put his hands up in fake surrender. “I don’t have the hair for it.”

“Then I’ll get you a wig.” Ebony raised an eyebrow and tried to imagine just how fabulous Ben would look with hair as long, wild, red and lustrous as her own.
