Chapter 15

Moments later we are all hovered over the crystal ball, Aunt Kat working her magic. She swirls her fingertips over the surface of the smooth, round glass, and a thick black mass appears inside the once clear ball.

“What’s that?” I ask, feeling somewhat better now that the surges of magic in my body have let up a little.

“Essence,” she answers, glancing up at me. “My idea of your essence, that is.” She drags the mass around inside the ball with her fingertips, moving it left and right, until out of the roiling smoke a face appears. It swirls and dances, smiling up at us, in my exact likeness. “Not bad, huh?”

“Not bad at all.” I smile and it smiles, creeping me right out.

She then whirls her hands around in quick repeating circles, causing the face to swirl away back into a mass. A twirling, churning, tornado of a mass, which spirals, reaching down through the glass. She tips her head back, closes her eyes and begins to chant. “We need a fool to be fooled by a dummy’s dummy. By an exact replica of Violet, mind, body, and flesh.” Her voice ripples, as if affected by the movement inside the glass, her tone ominous, but steady. “Let the doubling duplicate fool man, woman, child, and beast! Or whosoever else comes searching for the original.” She flings up her hands, as I stare into the ball, and the dimly lit empty cellblock back at the sheriff’s office appears. Aunt Kat winces an eye open then flings out her hands again. “Transport her likeness in dummy form, good enough to fool the sheriff or henchmen!”

She flicks out her fingertips, magic crackling from them, then snaps her fingers, and a dummy appears, out of the glass, behind the bars, standing in the cell.

“That’s amazin’,” Aunt Connie says, blinking. “Why, it looks bloody well just like ’er.” She grins up at me.

“That is does,” Cousin Viv says, sounding shocked.

“Good job, sister.” Aunt Kit knocks shoulders with her, playfully.

“Yeah. It truly is eerie how much the mannequin-girl looks like me,” I say, my voice quavering. I examine my double from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. Not one detail has been missed. “She’s even wearing my shoes,” I say aloud, not really meaning to. This is creepier than the Creep-O-Gram.

“Now, to animate her.” Aunt Kat winks, then raises her arms. I lean forward, staring into the crystal ball, excited to watch what happens next. Though my heart beats in my throat, I must admit, I think we’re really going to be able to pull this off.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see the door handle to the outside, turn. “Jeremy! He’s back!” I shout. My aunt’s eyes fling open, mid incantation.

Now what have I gone and done.

“I’m sorry—it’s just—”

“We need to work fast!” she tells me, elbowing me aside. I trip to the right as she throws up her arms, hovering her hands over the ball and moving them rapidly—her mouth moving rapidly too.
