Louisa awoke with a groan. Her mouth felt dry. There was no denying what she had done last night, no confusion about where she was. Not least because they had done it multiple times during the night, and she had been clear headed enough when they left the bar. But in the light of day Louisa felt embarrassed. She had never gone home with someone she had just met before, and she didn’t know how to act. Slowly she pried herself out of bed so she wouldn’t wake her bed mate and hunted around the enormous room for her clothes. She pulled on her underwear and jeans, her top and jacket. Her bag, she could remember, she had thrown down near the door. She looked across at Gil. He slept peacefully, his skin looking faintly grey in the dim light of the hotel room. Perhaps he had drunk more than she thought. Not wishing to disturb him and face the awkward conversation she felt sure occurred after a one-night stand, Louisa tiptoed out of the enormous hotel suite and out the door. Not sure how her bank account was holding up after last night, she made her way to the train station and took a long, slow train ride home. She would be late opening the store, but she was in desperate need of a shower and something a little more caffeinated than her usual peppermint tea.
