Jane awoke from undisturbed sleep, which was rare with all that she had on her mind. The investigation was having to take a backseat to the most urgent matter at hand — her mother. They were to meet at ten that morning at Spirit Corner.

Shadow and Freckles watched her dashing back and forth as she tried to get ready that morning. Shadow had an amused look on her face.

“You have toilet paper sticking out of your underpants, Jane.”

Jane twisted around and pulled the white paper out.

“Look, it’s going to be okay. Your mother wouldn’t be as foolish as to harm any one of you girls. She would suffer a fate worse than death. Witches don’t take too kindly to child abuse.”

“I’m not a child anymore, Shadow,” she said pulling a warm pullover on. The windows were covered in a thick layer of frost, condensation had formed overnight and a few small puddles of water sat on the windowsill reminding Jane to get them fixed. She had got a few quotes last year but then with all the renovations she had to do on the café, it had practically drained her bank dry. Some days she wished there was a spell for making money appear out of thin air.

She sat on the edge of the sofa, tugging her boots on and then got up and looked at herself in the mirror.

“Do you think the outfit makes me look as though I mean business?”

Jane had pulled out all dark clothes that morning. Tight-fitting, stretchy and comfortable clothing that would allow her to move fast if her mother tried anything. She ran a hand through her long hair and sighed. The very thought that she was going up against her mother was absurd. Why couldn’t she have got a mother who didn’t have a few screws loose?

“If you bring the whip, that might do it,” Shadow said with a smirk

Jane took a seat again and placed her hands around the cup of coffee before bringing it to her lips and enjoying a few minutes of peace before the day came rushing in.

“He said he wants to get together for dinner.”

Shadow was cleaning her paws. “Who?”

“Who do you think?”

“What did you say?”

“I said yes, of course.”

“Perhaps he has a few words to say before he leaves.”

Jane looked at her. “I’m going to tell him.”

“I know you are.”

“Why don’t I get the sense that you agree?” Jane asked.

“Look around you, Jane. Today you are about to go to war against your mother. Do you want him caught up in that?”

“No but then again, he faces danger every day in his work.”

“Danger? From who?”

“Open your eyes. How many murders have we had in this town? We are on our way to becoming the murder capital of Maine,” she said before taking another sip. The warm coffee calmed her nerves.

“You are right there,” Freckles said. “I face death every day,” he said eyeing Shadow.

Shadow batted his bowl with her paw. “I wouldn’t kill you, Freckles. Just bat you around a little.
