Chapter Eighteen

Ken Sanders had been in the real estate business for as long as Jane had been alive. He had flyaway white hair and he knew everyone in the town. Jane couldn’t see him as the killer. He was a people person. He really wanted to help you find a property that you liked. His experience in the industry and specifically his success at selling homes was what had made him known on the island and even further afield. Most people if they wanted to move to Crystal Cove would have found a place through Ken.

If he wasn’t working, he was usually down at his boat. He had the largest boat on the island. He was the kind of man that boasted of his endeavors. He was nice to everyone but he loved to tell you about his latest car, camera, or boat. It was as if he was trying to prove his worth to you.

It was because of this that Jane thought he might be to blame for the murder. Damon had muscled his way into the town. He had money behind him and had blitzed the island with his own face on everything. Damon had gained the number one position in all the search engines for keyword terms related to moving to Crystal Cove. This pissed Ken off to no end. He was no longer the big man on the block. Damon’s face was plastered next to his. If Ken had his face on a sign, Damon’s was twice as big. No wonder Ken was angry.

Damon was now taking his clients from him. What Damon had managed to do was offer homes with TVs inside and furniture. Things that Ken couldn’t swing. It was just enough leverage that Damon needed to make a name for himself. If Ken could sell homes, Damon was the one who could make them sell within a day. There really was no house, condo, or apartment he couldn’t shift off the market within a matter of twenty-four hours. He was so sure of himself he offered that if it didn’t sell he would buy it himself.

This meant people came to him. It meant there was no risk involved. The real estate business was sketchy at the best of times on the island. Ocean living cost a lot of money. Jane’s family was fortunate to have been there since homes had been built. In fact, most of the homes were originally owned by witches until they sold them off. The island was originally meant to be a safe place for witches to live. Only witches lived on it. That changed over time and Crystal Island opened its doors to others. Jane’s father said that was a big mistake.

Jane pulled up outside of Sanders Reality. It was a mammoth office positioned close to the ferry entrance. He wanted to be seen by everyone who got off the ferry. The problem was Damon had erected a huge sign with his face that blocked the building in the past week.
