CHAPTER NINETEEN

Cait returned to her apartment and transformed into her other identity, the most annoying part being the need to glue on the false fingerprints again. She complained, “I really have to figure out how to change my fingertips with magic.”

Aza had shrunk himself down to about guinea pig size to sit on her vanity while she dealt with her makeup. “Maybe you could ask the werewolves for help.”

“Shifters.”

He snorted, and a tiny puff of smoke came out of his nostrils, curling up to dissipate a couple of inches above his small head. “Whatever. If it looks like a werewolf, acts like a werewolf, and smells bad, it’s a werewolf.”

She laughed. “Fair enough. I suppose you are technically the closest thing I have to an expert on shifters. You can change size, for example. The troll can, too. I guess that’s a kind of shifting.”

He looked smug. “Exactly my point. Werewolves.”

“Okay. So, you will keep an eye in the sky on me, as usual.”

He nodded. “And you’re going to scream if you need me.”

“Deal.” Cait opened the portal, and they both stepped through to a nondescript alley she’d found during one of her nighttime runs. She sighed at the memory. “You know, I’m so busy that I haven’t been running. Delsanra's going to get on me about it. If I’m not finding time to do that much, I’m certainly not finding time to practice combat.”

Aza had launched himself into the air and was a hazy ripple as his camouflaged scales moved through the air above her. “Maybe you need to give something up?”

She laughed. “Yeah, taking care of a dragon.”

“As if I need taking care of.”

“You’re right. You’re always right.” When she’d used a secure burner phone to reach out earlier in the day about returning the object, she’d received a website to visit. She did so now and entered a code. It gave her an address.

She summoned a car and rode for about fifteen minutes through the city, admiring the neon and the revelers enjoying Boston’s nightlife before getting out at her destination. The website now showed another instruction, which said, “East, one block.”

Cait walked that way, glancing up only once to be sure Aza was still overhead. She could sense his presence, but not well enough to judge how close he was, only that he was within the range of their magical connection. When she reached the location, a new address popped up on her phone on the website.

She mapped it and summoned another autonomous vehicle with a groan. As she rode in the back, her mood grew darker as she realized she’d probably have several more stops along the way, courtesy of her contact’s paranoia. I’m going to ask Sashura how to become a telepath so I can talk to Aza. There must be a way.

She finally wound up at an unmarked door on a building hidden in the center of a block, accessed through an alleyway she wouldn’t have thought led anywhere useful. Even from twenty feet away, she sensed the anti-magic emitters inside.
