CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cait opened her eyes after extending her meditation time to twice its usual length because of exhaustion. She assessed herself first. Her new dagger, Eclipse, was in a sheath on her belt. She sensed it wouldn’t appreciate being left behind, now that they’d made a connection, and wondered how that would work out when she was in marshal mode. Otherwise, she felt healed physically, and her mind seemed clearer despite the numerous pressures upon it.

She extended her awareness outward to encompass Aza sleeping at her side. The dragon was snoring, which was always a good sign. After a few trips to the mountaintop, he'd learned he had no need to worry when the wards were up and used the time to rest with her. Her senses pushed further until they reached those wards, and she confirmed nothing unexpected was present inside them and they were still strong.

Finally, she opened her eyes and saw the spectral fox spirit of the mountain standing on the opposite side. She muttered some commands and moved her hand to sketch a symbol in the air, and the wards shifted to permit the fox to enter. Cait wasn’t sure whether he was blocked by them or was being polite. Either way, she didn’t believe he meant her harm. Aza had woken at her words and sat up, stretching his back and lifting his head toward the sky. He let out a mighty yawn that turned into a grin. Hello, fox.

The spirit of the mountain sensed his communication and inclined his head in a courteous nod. “Greetings to you, dragon.” He shifted his attention to her. “And to you, Caitriona Keane. How do you fare?”

“Surprisingly well. I presume you sensed my other new companion?”

He nodded. “I can detect that it is a sentient blade, but no more than that.”

“Her name is Eclipse. She’s from Oriceran.”

“A worthy partner?” His tone turned it into a question.

Cait replied, “Seems to be, although whether she thinks the same of me, I’m not sure.”

“Excellent. You will need all the help you can get against your foes.”

Straight to business, then. “Can you sense the wolves in the forest? That would be helpful, to know where they are.”

His muzzle shifted from side to side. “My awareness is limited to the mountain itself. No wolves are present. However, there have been.”

His last words sounded concerned. “Do you have any idea what they’re after?”

“No. The ones who visited seemed to have no specific destination or purpose.”

Aza observed, Sounds like they were checking out the land, looking for threats, or maybe treasure. Is there anything special about the mountain?

The fox sat and flicked its tail. “It is a natural point of magical power. The currents that run under the earth come together here.” Again, he shifted his gaze from the dragon to her. “You have experienced the strength of that conjunction yourself. It is what makes this such a good spot for your meditations. Plus, it has me.”

Cait asked, “Not every place like this has a guardian spirit?”

“No.
