CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Cait stepped through the portal into the backyard of her family’s home with a sigh of relief. After this week, I deserve a nice relaxing weekend. Since I won’t get that, maybe I can at least manage to get some rest. She’d worn a disguise and dropped off the artifacts with the guard at the PDA’s building, telling the man not to touch them. She directed him to call Paul Andrews, then headed to her apartment, packed, and hit the metaphysical road.

Brianna and Aisling ran screaming out of the back of the house, and her younger sister tackled Aza. The dragon came up play-fighting, and Brianna joined the fray. Waves of pleasure rolled into her mind from Aza as he snapped and snarled with mock ferocity like a happy puppy. Okay, maybe getting any relaxation was optimistic.

She walked into the house, threw her stuff into a closet near the entrance, pulled off her shoes, and padded into the kitchen. Her mother was preparing lunch, and Cait helped load the dishes and carry them to the table. Her father was reading in the living room, and she liberated a dinner roll and tossed it at his head. He laughed as he caught it one-handed and asked, “Butter?”

Cait sighed. “I do not come here on the weekends to be everyone’s servant like some real-life Cinderella. Get it yourself, lazybones.”

He sighed and looked at the book he cradled in his hands. “Disrespectful children. I don’t know what it is about you. Must’ve come from your mother’s side of the family.”

Entering the room with plates in her hands, Moira stated, “I heard that. Come here and say it again to my face.” Her father laughed and stood, then went over to her. Instead of replying, he kissed her on the forehead and walked to his chair at the table, snagging the butter along the way.

Her mother nodded. “That’s what I thought.”

Cait grinned and headed into the kitchen. Her parents were an interesting example of a loving relationship. They spent time apart while her father indulged in his pleasure and profession by doing archaeology on Oriceran, yet the absences never harmed their bond. Maybe some people are self-sufficient that way. I think I’d want to be around my partner more often than that. Shane came to mind, and a moment later, Will did too. Great. One step into the house and my mother’s expectations are at work on my brain.

A few minutes later, everyone was at the table except Aza, who was lying under it at her feet. They passed dishes and filled plates, and the conversation turned to matters of import. Cait asked, “Any news about the wolves?”

Moira shook her head. “Nothing. They’ve been quiet as far as we can tell.”

Aisling added, “We set up more detectors, but none have been triggered.”

Brianna stated, “Except the one.”

Aisling slapped her sister. “Will you shut up about that, please?”

Cait chuckled. “I sense a story.”

Brianna opened her mouth, but Aisling put her hand over it and spoke instead.
