Chapter Eleven

Rachel was welcomed into the coven, and although she wouldn’t reveal what she and Salem had done, the others knew without asking that it was significant. Witches with Salem’s powers didn’t waste time on small matters, and they were pleased to note that she was void of vanity. Witches never gossiped in public, but within Nightshade walls, it was in abundance. The consensus was that Salem was not only capable of taking over Zelda’s responsibilities immediately, but that her powers were such that she might be the only one who could keep Nightshade open and prospering. They all depended on that hope. Salem understood that intuitively. She was determined not to let them down.

Salem went in search of Monica and Tamsin. She found them in the dining room, sipping brews. “Tamsin, what did you put in this? It’s awful!” Monica was saying.

Tamsin sniffed it. “I did like you said. Dried leg of wart toad, the leaf of a sunflower, and powdered dog bone.”

“Ach! No wonder! I said dog’s bone, silly. Not the dog itself. I hope you didn’t kill one to make this.”

Tamsin paled. “Well, I didn’t have to. I found one on the road when I went for a walk earlier. It had been run over, so I brought it back.”

“You did what?”

“If you two are done poisoning one another, I’d like you both to walk into town with me,” piped up Salem from the doorway.

Monica turned her head to look over her shoulder. “That sounds much healthier than drinking her cooking,” she said, nodding her head in Tamsin’s direction.

“Well, I have to learn, don’t I?” Tamsin protested.

“Not at my expense, you don’t.”

“Come on, you two,” Salem cut in. “Let’s not bicker, shall we? Let’s get going.”

Monica caught up to Salem. “Are we walking or flying?”

Salem caught her breath. She hadn’t even considered the art of flying yet. “Daytime. Let’s walk. Anyway, I want to blend in with the locals. I’d like to see who they are and how they live.”

As Tamsin joined them, they went out the front doors and down the steps.

“They live very much like we do inside Nightshade,” Monica said. “In fact, many of them are witch wannabes.”

“Really?”

“Sure. Where better to live than at the edge of the grounds? The girls watch for us to come down—they want to learn and to discover if the rumors are true.”

“What about the boys?” Salem wanted to know.

“Oh, the male witches live in Lancaster Castle. The boys in town hang out outside their gates.”

“Lancaster Castle? Where’s that?”

“When you came, you probably stopped directly at Nightshade. If you’d continued down the road a little more, you would have seen it. In fact, the road ends there.”

“Are there organized activities between us and Lancaster Castle? I mean, social events or get-togethers with attendance?”

“Not if we can help it,” Monica answered quickly. “You might say we’re in competition.”

“How so?” The girls had left the Nightshade grounds and were slowly making their way down the main street of town. Salem was
