Sixteen

Lily woke the next morning to a growling stomach and the delayed realization that Romeo wasn’t in bed beside her. With a long, languid stretch, she stared at the empty side of the bed and grinned. “I can’t believe we never had dinner.” Her stomach growled again. “Yeah, I know. I blame Romeo for that.”

She threw the covers off and went to the doorway, where she’d dropped her purse the night before and never came back for it. “And that was…yep. Like sixteen hours ago.” She retrieved her phone, opened the text from Romeo, and grinned.

Went out for breakfast. You can blame me for skipping dinner.

Shaking her head, she stepped out into the Winnie’s kitchen and found the living space empty too. “I need a little something first…” The small Tupperware with three bran muffins was the first thing she saw in the pantry, so she went with one of those. After she’d placed it in the microwave for a few seconds and spread a little butter in the middle, she sat at the table with one of the best breakfasts in the world. “It doesn’t even matter that I’m alone,” she muttered with a shrug and picked a few crumbs off her plate before she took the last bite.

She had no sooner shoved the last piece into her mouth when the side door opened and Romeo stepped inside. “Wow, that smells amazing. What did you—oh. No. Get those things away from me.”

Lily snorted and fought to keep from spraying muffin crumbs all over the small table. “It’s gone,” she said, holding a hand over her mouth. “I ate it all.”

He raised an eyebrow at her and turned his head slowly to glare at the other two she’d left out on the counter. “You’ll never win.”

Laughing, she slid out of the booth and took her plate to the sink before she stored the muffins back in the pantry.

“But you…” He snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her toward him.

Her shout of surprise almost sent her mouthful of muffin all over him, but she covered her mouth and swallowed in one huge, painful gulp. “That’s so dangerous,” she said with a gasp.

“You’re dangerous.” He kissed her roughly, jerked back, and shook his head. “Trying to tempt me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Mm…muffins.”

She spun away from him and took a bottle of water from the fridge. “I wasn’t betraying you. I promise. But I did give you all my attention last night, and my stomach was getting angry.”

He raised an eyebrow and squinted at her. “A likely story.”

Lily snorted. “What’s in the bag?”

“Only El Paso’s finest Mexican food open this early in the morning.”

“Really?”

“Honestly, I have no idea. I might’ve even briefly stepped out of El Paso entirely.”

She stepped toward the plastic bag on the counter to examine its contents. “It sounds like an incredible adventure.”

“You have no idea.” He moved behind her and settled his hands on her hips. “Full of danger.” Leaning sideways, he looked at her. “And mystery.” His lips hovered below her ear as he whispered, “And I did it all for you.
