Knocking sounded in the distance. Huh? I opened my eyes. Ew: wet pillow under my cheek. I swiped the dribble off my face. Knock, knock. Oh, it was my bedroom door. “Yeah, come in.” My voice came out a croaky mess. I cleared my throat as Angelica entered.

“Hello, lazy bones.” She smirked.

“What time is it?”

She looked at her watch. “Six thirty.” She looked above my head, her eyes wide. “Is that the picture you bought yesterday?”

“Yes. Mrs Valentine did it. I don’t know. It just spoke to me.”

Her eyes widened. “What did it say?”

I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment, then looked at her. Was she serious? “No. I was speaking figuratively. I just had this overwhelming urge to buy it when I saw it.”

“Ah.” She nodded.

Wait, what? “Can witches spell paintings to actually talk to people?”

“Yes. It’s a classic witch-spy move to leave a message in artwork for a colleague.”

“Then wouldn’t it be more like a video?”

“The picture doesn’t change, Lily. Honestly, that would be too obvious.”

I sighed. Of course it would be—stupid me. I resisted an eye-roll.

She approached the picture, and I scooted towards the foot of my bed and placed my feet on the floor, to get out of her way. She opened her hand and placed her palm parallel with the picture, so she was almost touching the glass. My scalp prickled.

“What are you doing?”

“Just a moment, dear. It’s not polite to talk to a witch when she’s performing magic.”

I mouthed “sorry” because, well, it was impolite for me to talk right now. I was a fast learner. I bit my fingernail while I waited.

She dropped her hand to her side and turned around. “Well, Lily, you’ve stumbled upon something very interesting. And it might be an important clue. If it’s not, we can at least arrest someone for committing a crime.”

My heart raced. I’d actually found a clue? But hang on. Was I about to lose my painting? “What did you find? And please don’t tell me you need the painting as evidence.”

“I’m afraid so, dear. I’m going to send it to evidence.” She waved her hand towards the picture, and it disappeared.

What? Noooo! I frowned. Bye, bye, Mrs Valentine’s artwork. Bye, bye, seven hundred pounds. I wasn’t sure which hurt more. “Can I have it back when all this is over?”

“Yes, don’t worry. And we’ll be careful with it while it’s in our care.” She turned to leave.

“Hang on a minute! You can’t just tell me I’ve found a clue, whisk it away, then go. Please don’t leave me in suspense.” I wasn’t too ashamed to beg. I clasped my hands under my chin.

She shook her head. “Don’t worry. I won’t keep you waiting long. Why don’t we have dinner first, and then I’ll call everyone to the conference room. That’s why I came to get you. Olivia’s downstairs waiting to eat.” She smirked and walked out the door. Her voice was quiet but still reached me from the hallway. “Patience is a virtue, Lily.
