Salem decided to have lunch in the dining room along with the other witches. She knew they were spooked by Tianaâs death and thought it important that she make an appearance.
âSalem, do you have a moment?â It was Tamsin, Pettibone curled up in her arms as usual.
âSure, whatâs up? Listen, I think it might be a good idea if we donât permit the pets in the dining area. Not everyone is so fond of the idea, and they deserve an animal-free environment where they eat.â
âOh, sure, I understand. Heâs quite intelligent, as it turns out. Watch this.â She set the young cat down on the carpet. âPetti, wait for me in the hallway.â The cat responded with a meow and promptly walked directly out the doorway and sat on the far side of the hallway, inconspicuous and yet close enough to watch his mistressâs every move.
âTamsin, Iâm really impressed. Did you train him to do that?â
âNo,â she answered with a shrug. âAt least not in so many words. I just noticed that he responds to me almost as if he understands what Iâm saying. So, I take him with me wherever I go. It seems to make him behave better.â
âGood for you. How has your program for letting others have familiars come so far?â
âWell, thatâs what I wanted to chat with you about. I know how full your schedule is, what with the new headmaster and thenâ¦well, Tiana.â
âItâs okay. Actually, I came in here to have lunch because I felt like I wanted to be with everyone. It gets lonely being in that office alone.â
âAny clues yet?â
âNo, nothing.â Salem was careful not to elaborate. She couldnât expect Cordelia to maintain secrecy and then compromise it herself by telling others who didnât have a need to be includedâeven if it was Tamsin.
âThatâs too bad. Something will turn upâIâm sure of it. So, my question was this. I have a lot of interest but there are some questions. I think I have a handle on most of them, but one in particular sort of stumped me.â
âWhatâs that?â
âA couple of the gals wanted to conjure up their own familiarsâkind of like designing a room. They want to include certain characteristics.â
âYour thoughts on that?â Salem asked.
âWell, my opinion is that itâs too much to allow. I mean, face it, most of the girls here are in trainingânot fully-fledged witches yet. I think letting them conjure up creatures leaves the door open to mistakes and tons of trouble. Youâre the only one who could undo their messes if they get in over their heads. I like knowing, for example, that Pettibone is just a cat I rescued and not the product of incantations.â
Salem munched her sandwich, nodding as she chewed. âI totally agree,â she said after swallowing. âIn fact, I insist on that. Will that work for you?â
Tamsin broke into a grin. âThatâs exactly what I wanted to hear. It takes the pressure off me when they complain about it. Well, Iâll leave you to your lunch.
