Chapter 13

I tried texting Will when I got home, but it went unread. As disappointed as I was that I wasn’t going to see him, I had a nap with Abby curled up next to me and Ted lying at the foot of the bed. I’d also had a stowaway in my bag, and GTB burrowed in next to Abby. There wasn’t much room for me, but I was exhausted and fell straight to sleep. I set my phone alarm with enough time to have a shower and a coffee before Imani and James came to collect me.

They were right on time.

Imani made the doorway for all of us, and we filed in one by one to the toilet. The walk from the toilet to the hotel was becoming ridiculously familiar. As we set out, I called Angelica and asked her to grab GTB while we were out and drop him back to HQ. Luckily, she wasn’t annoyed.

Imani chuckled at the exchange, and when I hung up, she asked, “How are you feeling after your sleep, love?”

“Not ready to go partying, but much better, thanks. I have enough in reserve to make a doorway if I need to, but I’ll save it.” The “don’t you dare” look James threw my way had me adding that last bit on. “Cool your jets. I’m not going to. I’m just saying that if things get hairy and you don’t get a chance, I’m capable.”

“And things might get hairy,” Imani said. “I would imagine that Magnum’s disappearance has been noticed by now. Stay alert.”

James’s magic feathered my scalp, and I looked at my aura. “Thanks.”

He’d cast a return to sender on me. His aura showed he had one, too, but if he wanted to cast anything at someone to hurt them, he’d have to drop his. Maybe I could stand in front of him if it came to that. I wasn’t going to tell him, though—he’d never agree to it. It was best not to give people a choice sometimes.

As soon as we entered the hotel, I was on alert. Imani and James managed to appear cool, calm, and collected, and they were way less obvious about looking every which way to avoid any nasty surprises.

Breathe, Lily. Just breathe.

I didn’t want to draw attention, so I did my best to chill and ignore my racing heart. I trusted they had my back, but knowing I couldn’t cast any meaningful spells made me feel vulnerable. Unfortunately, no one could wait for me to recharge properly. We couldn’t stall this investigation—the more time we gave the cartel, the more organised they would be, and I would bet we were closer to discovering the extra players that MI6 couldn’t identify, and they would scuttle into the darkness if given enough opportunity.

Imani led the way to the lifts, James falling back to walk behind me. A tall man in his thirties came up behind James at the lift. I glanced at his aura—a non-witch. Not that he’d be harmless if he was working for the bad guys, but we could easily deal with him if he tried anything.
