“HAVE WE BEEN ARRESTED?” Gloria demanded as we were ushered into the custody suite. I’d been here before but never as an actual punter. It was empty but I could hear someone banging repetitively on a door or a wall.

“Not yet,” the police officer said. “You’re just here to talk to us and we’ll review the complaints that are being made.”

Ian said, “Well, I’m making a formal complaint against her,” and he pointed at me. “I want her arrested. And charged with assault.”

“We will look into your concerns, sir. Could you all have a seat over there?”

“You expect me to sit with the person who has assaulted me?” Ian demanded.

“Yes. Or I can arrest all three of you and put you in separate cells.”

Ian acquiesced and we went to sit in an awkward line on a solid moulded plastic bench. I suppose the fact that it was attached to the wall meant that no one could pick it up and hurl it at a police officer. The officers spoke in low tones to the custody sergeant, and all three of them occasionally glanced our way. I am sure one of them smiled a little.

“I did not assault you, you odious little man,” I hissed to Ian.

“And now you’re threatening me!” he said, loudly enough for the police to hear. They sighed and tutted at us.

“Ugh.” I slumped back against the wall and knocked my head against the stained paintwork. How many other people had sat here and done that? I inched forward, thinking about lice.

The officers called Gloria through to an interview room first. I was left sitting most uncomfortably next to Ian. The desk sergeant tapped away at her computer though I knew she was keeping a sideways eye on us.

“How did you know that Kennedy woman?” Ian asked me, suddenly.

“I just bumped into her in town. Why?” I asked.

“No reason.”

He probably thought I was lying. After a pause, I said, “Why were you here asking about Bill Braithwaite?”

“How do you know that I was? Oh, your sister must have said something. That’s a blatant breach of privacy and trust. I see that I shall be making another complaint.”

“Oh, do shut up.”

“Fine by me.”

“And me.”

So we sat for another minute in silence.

But he broke first. “What’s your interest in Bill?”

I hesitated. Did I think he was involved, or was the death to do with Kennedy? There did not seem to be a link between Ian and Kennedy. “His death might not have been suicide,” I said carefully. If Ian was guilty somehow, then maybe my words would scare him into thinking he had been found out.

“I agree, actually,” Ian said. “In fact, I was rather hoping that he would have been the guest of honour at the parade.”

“Bill?” I exclaimed. “Oh, come on. He hated all that stuff. He didn’t want anything to do with the war.”

“I realise that. I had been interviewing him for some academic work and he was rather reluctant to speak about it.”

“You were – what?”

“I was working with him on a project.
