Chapter Nine

I was supposed to be back at college the next day – when I stepped into the shower it was a little after 1am, and while not my latest night prior to early morning classes, it would still be a challenge to drag my ass out of bed in six hours. I would have breakfast with the girls, head to classes and get back to see them.

Fate, or chance, or whatever else set the wheels of the world in motion, of course, had another plan in store for me.

I still hadn’t decided how I was going to balance these newfound responsibilities with college – I was in my final year and intended on sticking it out, but with the revelation of this hidden world beneath the surface of what I had deemed to be reality, my priorities had really been shaken up.

But I wasn’t a quitter. Even if the world was in peril, I was still gonna finish what I had started.

Beneath the steaming water of the shower head I reached that oh-so pleasurable zen point where time seems to stand still, and you can finally get some peace and quiet. I had already checked for any sign of Rel before I came in – I didn’t think that the fox-familiar was some kind of voyeur-creeper, but after my first meeting with him I couldn’t be too sure.

So when I heard another nearby clunk, I didn’t know what to think.

Quickly I opened my eyes, sliding the shower door back and looking about the bathroom in the near complete-darkness. No shapes moved, and nothing else made a further sound.

BOOM.

It had come from somewhere in the house. Drying myself off fast and stumbling out into my bedroom, I shouted out from behind the door.

‘Girls?! Is everything all right out there?’

No response. Only the resounding echo of that colossal sound.

Shit…

I pulled on my clothes and grabbed the short staff from beside my bed, and took a quick, readying breath as my heart pounded rapaciously in my chest before swinging the door wide with my weapon at the ready.

But there was nothing to fight – in fact there was nothing there at all.

I wasn’t standing on the upstairs landing of the coven, but on the chapped, dried dirt of a desert wasteland. The sky overhead was marred with clouds tinged with a toxic green color, a burst of lightning occasionally rushing through them soundlessly.

I turned to look back at where I had just emerged from, seeing my bedroom as a small building with the door closed, but when I returned to open it there was nothing; the doors fell from my hand, slipping off its hinges and tapering back before striking the ground. The walls followed suit, collapsing in on themselves to reveal nothing but a pile of splintered wood stacked messily.

‘This has to be dream…’ I said to myself quietly, shaking my head. ‘This isn’t real…’

‘It is a kind of dream, so to speak.’

I spun on my heel at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, finding myself face to face with none other than the Purple Man.
