Thea sought ever-reliable sources of reinforcement in chocolate and coffee the following morning before heading to Ms. Evangeline’s.

She had been here before, and not only in those early years of her friendship with Mia. In the past several months, Evangeline had offered her large, spacious home as a secondary location for the Free Witch Council’s activities. They had held fundraisers and functions here with Thea attending as Mia’s special guest on multiple occasions. If Ms. Evangeline knew how to do anything, it was throw a good party.

There was no party today. When Thea pulled up to the large plantation house that functioned as both Evangeline’s home and a hub for the council, she found everything serenely quiet. The mid-morning sun glowed through large glass windows and over the perfectly manicured grounds.

Kira whistled. “Big house. Does she live here alone?”

“She has staff who work for her, but other than that, I don’t think so,” Thea replied. As far as she knew, Ms. Evangeline had no family in the area, a strange thing for a hedge witch of her prestige.

She explained to Kira that Evangeline had lived here for decades, operating a magic business that had done well for many years. “This building is old and didn’t always serve as a plantation house. Evangeline’s great-grandmother ran it as a brothel. A highly successful one, at that.”

Kira raised a brow. “And I suppose one of Evangeline’s current businesses might also be…”

Thea shook her head, chuckling. “No, I don’t think so, though Evangeline did operate a hotel here for several years.”

“Thanks for the history lesson,” Kira chirped. She checked her watch. “Isn’t Mia supposed to be here by now?”

She was. Mia’s administrative assistant had promised that she would arrive at 11:30. It was almost 11:45. It wasn’t like Mia to be late. What concerned Thea more was that Mia hadn’t called or texted her in over twenty-four hours. “I think we’ve been stood up,” Thea grumbled at last, her heart sinking. “No point in waiting anymore.”

“Maybe Mia is too busy to check her phone,” Kira offered, but they both knew the truth. Mia was avoiding Thea.

She can’t do it forever, Thea thought. She glanced at Kira. “Best you get into cat form now.”

Kira sighed. “I haven’t been out of my human form in months. I’m not going to enjoy being stuffed in your bag again.”

Thea grimaced. “Have I ever told you that you’re the best extra-dimensional entity ever?”

“You could say ‘best friend.’”

“All right. Best friend. Now, hop in.”

Kira shifted into her cat form, looking as sleek and soft to the touch as ever. She maintained her wide, green eyes in all forms. After she was safely inside Thea’s satchel, Thea approached the front door of the plantation house. She rang the bell, hoping Evangeline was home.

A housekeeper answered the door and ushered Thea inside. “I’m the witch liaison for the Arcane Investigation Division,” Thea explained. “I’m here to see Evangeline. Is she available?”

The housekeeper dipped her head. “Ms. Boudreaux is busy at the moment, but I will tell her you have arrived.
